Another wide for the Gabba
Steve Harmison’s wide in the Ashes two years ago was matched by MitchellJohnson after tea on Saturday. Johnson had switched to the Vulture StreetEnd and his first ball to Ross Taylor swung before homing in on RickyPonting at second slip. It was so wide Brad Haddin had no chance ofintercepting the delivery, but Ponting calmly accepted the ball and sentit on its way back to the bowler. This time the ground didn’t groan.Umpiring hits and misses
After benefiting from Rudi Koertzen’s caught-behind mistake involving MichaelHussey on Friday, New Zealand suffered the pain of cricket’s revenge inthe second innings. Both Jesse Ryder and Brendon McCullum were on thewrong side of tight decisions that turned the target of 327 into animpossible one. Ryder was hit high by Mitchell Johnson and Billy Doctrovegave him out lbw while Koertzen ruled the same way when McCullum paddedup. However, Taylor seemed to benefit shortly after from a caught-behinddecision that convinced all the Australians but not Doctrove.Fourth to 300
The final stages of Brett Lee’s journey to 300 wickets were slow, but hefinally became the fourth Australian to the milestone with the third ballof the second innings. Lee went to India with 289 and after four Testsreturned home still three short. Two victims on Friday pushed him to 299and Jamie How’s edge to Ponting at second slip sent Lee into a relievedcelebration.Tail between his legs
Lee’s day was not all smiles after he found an unorthodox way to get out.Facing Daniel Vettori, Lee went back to defend, collected an inside edgeand the ball went through his legs on to the stumps. He left slowly for 7but by then Australia’s lead was more than 250, and there were soon morereasons to smile.Southee receives a jolt
Hand injuries have been common lately – Lee and Anil Kumble both split thewebbing between their fingers during the India series – and Tim Southeeadded to the list while making a fabulous save. He left the field fortreatment but returned shortly after with his wrist strapped, finishingthe innings when Stuart Clark drove him to mid-off.And now to the weather
After the torrential rain and the burning sun of the past week the windcame. A severe weather warning was issued predicting gusts of up to 100kphand the boundary markers struggled to cope with the blustery conditions.Either side of lunch there was the opportunity for some easier runs on theeastern side of the ground as the sponsor’s ropes blew in. A few steelpegs were needed to return the field to an oval shape.

Celtic: Josip Juranovic keen on Hoops move

Legia Warsaw right-back Josip Juranovic is keen on a move to Celtic Park, according to Sky Sports.

The Lowdown: Right-back issues in the market

Celtic have made seven signings this summer, however, they are yet to add to their right-back ranks.

Anthony Ralston has been the man used in that position by Ange Postecoglou, scoring twice in his first five games of the season.

It appeared as if Royal Antwerp’s Aurelio Buta would be the right-back to arrive in Glasgow, with a £3m deal reportedly agreed at the end of July.

However, a move is yet to go through, with Everton now in the race for the Portuguese defender.

The Latest: Juranovic update

Sky Sports shared an on-air transfer claim regarding Celtic and Juranovic towards the end of July.

They have now provided an update on a potential move, claiming the title-winning full-back is keen to join the Hoops.

The report claims that Juranovic is expected to be Celtic’s next target after Buta and would be available for around £2.5m.

The Verdict: Sign

Even though Ralston has begun the campaign in strong style, a new right-back is needed to bolster Postecoglou’s options in that area.

Juranovic is a Croatia international who has over 200 games of senior experience at just 25 years of age, a level of experience far beyond Ralston.

He can also play as a right-midfielder and appears to be at the top of his game with a career high Transfermarkt valuation of £2.25m, so a £2.5m move could be a shrewd piece of business by the Hoops.

Celtic closing in on Aurelio Buta

An update has emerged on Celtic’s pursuit of Royal Antwerp’s Aurelio Buta.

What’s the talk?

The Athletic’s Celtic correspondent Kieran Devlin has claimed that the Hoops are closing in on the signing of the 24-year-old.

Devlin shared an article on how Buta could fit in at Celtic Park, with the tweet starting: “So it looks like Celtic are (finally) closing in on a right-back.”

Frimpong replacement

Celtic fans will be delighted with this news as he could be the perfect replacement for Jeremie Frimpong, albeit almost eight months on from the latter’s departure from the club. The former Manchester City man left for Bayer Leverkusen in January and has not been replaced with a permanent addition as of yet, with Jonjoe Kenny spending the second half of the campaign on loan at Parkhead.

The first obvious point of comparison is their respective heights. Frimpong and Buta are both 5 foot 7 and play at right-back, suggesting that they are very similar players in stature. They are small, nimble, and able to get up and down the pitch to provide Celtic with defensive and attacking value.

In Devlin’s article for The Athletic, he also compared the pair, stating: “We can use Jeremie Frimpong as a point of comparison, although opting for his breakthrough 2019-20 season rather than 2020-21 for comparison as he left midway through for Bayer Leverkusen. Frimpong is a full-back/wing-back hybrid in a similar mould if younger and more inexperienced.”

This shows that he could be an ideal replacement for Frimpong in style, whilst he could also have the quality to make an impact in the Scottish Premiership. The full-back was touted with a move to Wolves back in 2019 and journalist Aster Nzeyimana heaped praise on the “very gifted” defender, saying: “He’s one of the best full-backs in the Belgium league – that’s a widespread opinion.

“In the last two years he’s grown defensively, he has admitted that himself. He’s quite a small player but he’s technically very gifted. We have a history in Belgium of good attacking full-backs and he really fits right in. He’s instrumental to Antwerp.”

The 24-year-old has 19 assists in 108 games for Antwerp, which highlights the attacking quality he can provide from the right flank.

Celtic fans could enjoy watching him bomb down the wing on the overlap before whipping in a cross for a forward to finish, and it is now down to the club to get this deal over the line to bolster Ange Postcoglou’s squad.

Essex keep promotion hopes alive

Sixteen wickets tumbled on the first day at Derby, as Gloucestershire slumped to 98 for 6 in reply to Derbyshire’s underwhelming first-innings total of 188. By the close of play, the difference between the teams was Steve Stubbing’s excellent unbeaten innings of 62 from 103 balls. He had come to the crease with his side reeling at 54 for 4, which soon became 88 for 6 as Chris Rogers (40) became the first of five wickets for David Brown in a remarkable 6.5-over spell. But he was still there when the No. 11, Charl Langeveldt, fell after clubbing a handy 21 from 13 balls, and the value of his innings was soon apparent as Graeme Wagg set about redressing the balance of the match. He took 4 for 18 in 8.2 overs as none of Gloucestershire’s top six exceeded Will Porterfield’s 23.Essex need a hefty victory over second-placed Warwickshire if they are to keep their promotion hopes alive going into the final round, and their batsmen did their best to fulfil their side of the bargain on the first day at Chelmsford. No-one got stuck in for the century that might have decided the course of the game, but contributions all down the order – a pair of 72s from Ryan ten Doeschate and Jaik Mickleburgh, and a pair of 42s from Ravi Bopara and James Foster – carried them to 333 for 8 at the close. Warwickshire’s bowlers stuck to their task, with their new signing Rikki Clarke claiming 2 for 49 in ten overs, while the New Zealander, Chris Martin, claimed the vital wicket of ten Doeschate shortly before stumps.Chaos is engulfing Glamorgan as the season draws to a close – their chief executive, Mike Fatkin, went earlier in the week, and now the groundsman, Les Smith, has followed close behind. But, on the field, the team are doing their best to put all such issues out of mind, and on the first day against Leicestershire at Sophia Gardens, they took command with the bat, thanks to a boundary-laden 140 from Gareth Rees, and an excellent unbeaten 80 from Michael Powell. For Rees, it was his third century of the season, and contained 20 fours and a six. He made light of the early loss of his opening partner, David Hemp, and went on to completely dominate a second-wicket stand of 97 with the teenager, Tom Maynard, who made 26. Leicestershire were kept in the frame by their opener Dillon du Preez, who claimed three of the four wickets to fall, including Jamie Dalrymple for 9.Though Stephen Moore continued his superb season with 111 – his fifth first-class century of 2008 – Worcestershire looked as though they could have done with the services of Graeme Hick as they let Middlesex claim the ascendancy on the first day at Kidderminster. The retiring Hick was sadly robbed of his swansong by a long-standing elbow injury, and without him his Worcestershire team-mates toppled to a disappointing 265. That total did, however, represent something of a fightback, after Tim Murtagh’s 6 for 52 had reduced them to 22 for 3, and 203 for 9, before Chris Whelan more than doubled his career runs tally with a mature 58 from No. 9. By the close, Andrew Strauss had underlined Worcestershire’s missed opportunity with an unbeaten 66, though Gareth Batty did claim the wicket of Billy Godleman for 31.

Gold has ‘good news’ on Romero to Spurs

Taking to Twitter, sharing his latest piece for football.london, Tottenham Hotspur correspondent Alasdair Gold has dropped some ‘good news’ for supporters regarding Cristian Romero.

The Lowdown: Spurs in Romero talks…

Tottenham have been in talks to sign the Argentine for over a week, with Sky Sports first detailing a £34m (€40m) offer to Atalanta for his services.

The Serie A side remained stubborn over their asking price for Romero, however, despite the player himself ‘pushing’ for a move to north London (Fabrizio Romano).

Now, correspondent Gold has shared some ‘good news’ on the transfer saga in a timely boost amid the Harry Kane news.

The Latest: Spurs closing in on Romero…

As per the journalist, writing for football.london, Tottenham are now closing in on a deal to sign Romero with talks in the ‘final stages’.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-latest-updates-copy/” title=”Tottenham latest developments…” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Indeed, Spurs are confident that a €50 million (£42.7m) move will be completed after extensive talks with Atalanta as they eye a third major summer signing.

Personal terms are already agreed and Romero himself is keen to join Spurs, with Gold sharing the article on his Twitter feed and writing:

“At least some good news this morning as the move for Cristian Romero is finally edging towards completion in what is going to cost Spurs around 50m euros.”

The Verdict: Welcome update…

As the reports of Kane unrest grow stronger and stronger after he missed training today, this news on Tottenham’s number one centre-back target comes as a welcome update.

Fabio Paratici is looking to oversee a major defensive overhaul before the transfer window deadline on August 31 and he could hardly start with a better capture than Romero.

Winning the Serie A MVP award for best defender in 2020/2021, he also averaged a mighty 3.1 interceptions per 90 over 29 league starts – far more than any Spurs player managed in the Premier League (WhoScored).

At 23-years-old and with plenty of years ahead at the top level, potentially snapping Romero up for £42.7m is a phenomenal bit of business.

West Ham transfer update on Caleta-Car

Many West Ham United fans have been left to buzz as a transfer update emerged on Duje Caleta-Car.

As per The Athletic (via West Ham Central), the Marseille central defender will be made available for a mere £17m in the summer window, but he is likely to be sold for even less in the shape of £13m.

The Hammers had a £25m bid rejected for him in last summer’s window, as he wanted to play UEFA Champions League football, but this is no longer the case, and so they may revisit their past interest.

Caleta-Car would be a much welcomed addition to David Moyes’ squad, given that they are in the Europa League and he has a lot of experience playing in that competition.

On the pitch, the Croatia international had a great individual season in Ligue 1, winning no fewer than 3.7 of his duels a game while also averaging 3.9 clearances and 1.3 interceptions per match (Sofascore).

Nonetheless, at just 24, Caleta-Car is of a good age at the moment and will likely only get better, so snapping him up for as little as £13m could turn out to be an absolute steal.

West Ham fans on Caleta-Car transfer update

These Irons buzzed as the transfer update was shared on Twitter, with one member of the London Stadium faithful even going as far as to claim that the price was ‘amazing’:

“£13m is an amazing price. Would be interested to see what Milenkovic is valued at, but £13m too good to pass up”

“£13m-17m is a great bargain! Caleta-Car is another 6ft3+ CB who is composed on the ball, reads the game well, doesn’t lunge in, works hard, offers strength, a great passing range & an aerial presence that makes him valuable at defending & a threat when attacking!”

Ponting to notch up 300 ODIs

Ricky Ponting will play his 300th one-day international on Friday and West Indies should be worried

Ricky Ponting will play his 300th one-day international on Friday and West Indies should be worried. Arguably no player has lifted as consistently for his milestone matches as Ponting, which is peculiar as he insists such landmarks mean little to him. Ponting made centuries in his 50th, 150th and 250th ODIs, as well as a half-century in his 100th one-day international and a pair of hundreds in his 100th Test.In Grenada he will join Steve Waugh as the only Australians to appear in 300 one-day internationals and Ponting said it was yet another achievement that he would not truly appreciate until after he retired. “It’s all probably something I’ll look back on when I’m finished and be proud of,” Ponting told . “I’ve never been one to even talk about such things in the rooms or anything like that.”I said when I played 100 Tests I was probably as proud of that achievement as anything else, being in the game for that long. So again, I guess this is a good achievement because it says that you’ve been in the game for a long time.”Although Ponting claims not to remember his mammoth efforts in milestone games, they have been so frequent that it is hard to believe they are coincidences. His highest ODI score of 164 came in his 250th match, the Johannesburg game that will mostly be remembered for Australia scoring a world-record 434 then having it chased down by South Africa. Until that point his best one-day score was 145, posted against Zimbabwe in his 50th ODI.In his 100th he managed 50 against Pakistan, he scored 119 against England in his 150th game, and in his 100th Test he starred with 120 and 143 at the SCG against South Africa. On this Caribbean tour he has already passed 10,000 Test runs but it was one of his least remarkable landmark performances that Ponting remembers most, when he made 10 in Harare in his 200th ODI.”I remember Tim Nielsen, who was the assistant coach at the time, making up a shirt and drawing something in black texta all over a white T-shirt and then presenting it in the warm up to me,” Ponting said. “That was about as good as it gets.”At 33, Ponting has plenty of time ahead of him to build on his memorable – or for him, forgettable – milestone achievements. For now, he just wants to end a slight dip in ODI form that has resulted in single-figure scores in his past four innings, while West Indies are hoping that history does not repeat when he joins the 300 club on Friday.

Journalist says West Ham willing to sell Manuel Lanzini

The Evening Standard’s Jack Rosser has told Football FanCast that West Ham are prepared to sell Manuel Lanzini this summer if the price is right.

Lanzini flourished in his first three seasons with the Hammers having been signed when Slaven Bilic was manager, quickly becoming the heartbeat of their attack – contributing 35 goals during that period, with exactly 40 percent of those coming in 2017-2018.

Such was Lanzini’s blistering form for the Hammers, he was named in Argentina’s 23-man squad for the World Cup.

However, an ACL injury suffered in training not only ended his chances of playing in Russia but saw him miss almost the entire Premier League campaign in 2018-2019.

Lanzini has managed to remain fit for the previous two years but has slipped down the pecking order under David Moyes and made just five Premier League starts last season.

Reports from France believe that he could be on his way to Marseille this window, and Rosser told Football FanCast that Moyes would be willing to allow him to leave:

“Lanzini is another one who could potentially move on and free up some wages, although Moyes did really like him. Lanzini is an option that if a bid comes in, they would be happy to let him go.”

Steve Waugh left out of early World Cup squad

AAP02-Dec-2002BRISBANE – Steve Waugh’s one-day international career is over after theTest captain was left out of the provisional 30-man squad forAustralia’s World Cup defence in Africa from February. The 37-year-old Waugh had held slim hopes of fighting his way back intothe team after he was dropped last February but the message was cleartoday when he was not included not among the top 30 Australian limitedovers players.Waugh’s 10 teammates from yesterday’s Ashes series triumph over Englandwere named in the provisional World Cup squad along with some outsidersin young Victorian legspinner Cameron White, Tasmanian paceman DamienWright, versatile South Australian Mark Higgs and former Test spinnerBrad Hogg.Selectors named three conventional allrounders in Shane Watson, AndrewSymonds and Ian Harvey while West Australian wicketkeeper-batsman RyanCampbell was also included. The squad will be trimmed to 15 players by December 31 according to theguidelines arranged between the World Cup’s 14 participating nations.Players can be brought in from outside the 30-man squad but that wouldbe unlikely in Australia’s case.”This is really the first phase in selecting the squad to attend SouthAfrica for the 2003 World Cup,” chairman of selectors Trevor Hohns said.”There are a number of players we need to continue looking at over thecoming month as we move to cut the squad by half.”That will be a challenging task because there are several players thatcould fill a variety of positions for us at the World Cup.”So far we have selected a healthy mix of players – batsmen, bowlers,all-rounders and three wicket-keepers, which gives us a broad range tochoose from when finalising our list.”The Australian side is scheduled to depart for the World Cup on January29 next year following the Allan Border Medal presentation on January28.Australia’s provisional World Cup squad: Ricky Ponting, Adam Gilchrist,Michael Bevan, Andrew Bichel, Jason Gillespie, Matthew Hayden, BrettLee, Darren Lehmann, Damien Martyn, Glenn McGrath, Shane Warne, ShaneWatson, Justin Langer, Jimmy Maher, Greg Blewett, Nathan Bracken, StuartClark, Michael Clarke, Ryan Campbell, Nathan Hauritz, Brad Hogg, MichaelHussey, Ashley Noffke, Andrew Symonds, Brad Williams, Brad Haddin, IanHarvey, Cameron White, Mark Higgs, Damien Wright.
