Ex-Spurs man’s verdict on Poch return

Former Tottenham Hotspur star Paul Stewart believes that there is a 50/50 chance that Mauricio Pochettino will return to the club this summer in a sensational managerial move.

The sacking of Jose Mourinho midway through the campaign has left Spurs on the hunt for a new boss.

They have been linked with a number of potential head coaches, including Antonio Conte and Erik Ten Hag.

But reports over the past week have centred primarily on Pochettino, with The Athletic reporting that the two parties are in talks over a potential reunion.

Spurs sacked Pochettino 18 months ago, while the Argentine only joined PSG in January.

It would be a headline-grabbing move but Goal have reported that the former Southampton boss has asked to be allowed to leave the French club, with Real Madrid also interested in appointing him.

Stewart is not sure if Pochettino will be willing to make the move to north London, given the contract he is on in France, and the fact that he is working with the likes of Neymar and Kylian Mbappe, but he has not ruled out the prospect of him coming back to north London.

Speaking exclusively to Football FanCast, he said: “He’s four months into his tenure at PSG so I’m going to say it’s 50/50, purely and simply because he’ll be on a lucrative contract at PSG, he’s working with some of the best players in the world at PSG and he may well see that as another project like he did with the Spurs project.”

Now, they themselves are preparing for the WorldCup at New Zealand in December this year. Every day, one can find themsweating out on a small piece of land in the Maidan area of Kolkata. But ask them, and they will tell you that even though they have beento the Gardens, they have never seen the stars play. They have noteven seen pictures of the Indian cricketers on the telly or in thenewspapers. Surprising isn’t it? But then these cricketers are blind.Gaurav Goenka, Chandan Maity, Pradip Jha, Santosh Sahani and LNAdhikari are four blind cricketers from Bengal who are practicing dayand night to be ready for selection to the camp for the probables. Onewas surprised to see the manner in which they played the game. The batwas the normal one. The ball was of plastic with small ball bearingsinside. The bowling was under arm and the batsmen played their shotsdepending on the sound that the bearings made as the ball was rolledalong the pitch. The fielders also did the same, moving in thedirection of the sound that the ball emitted. "We do not find itdifficult," said Goenka. He even asked this correspondent to bowl andconfidently handled under arm leg spin. Even when the pace was varied,Goenka was equal to the task. The cricketers however, have one complaint. The apathy of the CricketAssociation of Bengal (CAB) towards them. "We do not have a properplace to practice," laments Pradip Jha. Repeated requests to the CABhave been of no avail. "But then we fight on simply because we lovethe game," said Jha. One can see their tenacity. They do not want anysympathy but help for going ahead in life. "We will not be able tosee what you write for us," is their chorus. But please come again. We need your moral support," says Goenka. One realizes that eventhough the cricketers are blind, they give a light of hope to allthose who fight darkness.* Newly formed associations in wrangling matchWrangling between two newly-formed cricket associations of the newstate has taken a curious turn with the Cricket Association ofJharkhand (CAJ) filing two cases against the JCA (Jharkhand CricketAssociation) in two courts praying for injunction on JCA’s election onJune 17.Both the cases were filed on Wednesday by CAJ annual member Jaki Ahmedin the Munsiff Court in Jamshedpur and the CAJ secretary Prabir Kumarin the Saraikela Court in Saraikela-Kharswan district praying for thepermanent injunction on the JCA election on June 17 or on any otherdate. The petitioners also accused the JCAchief, Deval Sahay and the chairman of adhoc committee, SP Sinha fortrying to create disturbances in the smooth running of CAJ after beingfrustrated in their attempt to capture power. The two organisations came into being after the creation of Jharkand. The election of CAJ was held here on May 13 in the presence of theChief Judicial Magistrate, AK Singh in which 298 members participatedand office bearers and committee members were duly elected.

Wolves: Who could Lage’s first signing be?

How Wolves go about welcoming new players to Molineux this summer will seemingly depend on who leaves the club.

Reports this week dictate that if the Old Gold want to spend big, they’ll have to sell some of their best players first.

Ruben Neves is one of the stars of this team and could be sold but there remain doubts over the future of Adama Traore too.

It’s a complex time for the Wolves board who lost Nuno Santo as a result of their proposed transfer plans this summer.

He was left unhappy with the lack of resources he was going to be given so, understandably, he took his leave.

One manager the club have been linked with is Bruno Lage. A deal has been moving forward in the last few days and it would appear that he is at the top of their shortlist.

He and his team were dubbed “spectacular” for the way they won the Portuguese top-flight with Benfica while Lage’s progressive style of management and the way he can take young players forward is admirable.

Lage could also be highly beneficial in landing one of Wolves’ long-standing targets; Carlos Vinicius.

The Benfica striker spent the campaign on loan at Tottenham where he played just nine times in the Premier League.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-wolves-transfer-rumours-and-news-soumare-dias-dembele-marques-nuno-santo” title=”Read the latest Wolves transfer rumours and news!”]

Spurs had an option to buy the Brazilian this summer but it’s unlikely they’ll take up that opportunity.

Wolves are queuing up for his signature and could finally sign him this summer. They had a bid rejected last January and were knocked back again before he joined the Lilywhites.

It’s now thought he could cost the Midlands outfit around €25m to €30m (£21m-£26m).

If that goes through then he could form a simply magical partnership with Lage. The duo worked together at Benfica and it’s under the Portuguese manager that Vinicius thrived.

In 2019/20, the striker played 41 times with Lage at the helm, scoring 22 goals and providing a further 12 assists for his teammates.

It was a marvellous campaign for a player who seemed to love playing under the Wolves-linked head coach.

Thus, if the pair link up in the Midlands next season, they should hit the ground running. Vinicius knows how Lage works and the manager knows how to get the best from him.

With Willian Jose heading back to Real Sociedad, signing another forward certainly makes sense.

Speaking last year, Jose Gomes, his former manager at Rio Ave, said: “He’s a powerful player, and very intelligent. He is someone who always gets himself into goalscoring positions.”

That’s already an improvement on Jose who only scored one goal in the Midlands, very rarely getting himself into areas he could score from.

Vinicius and Lage is a mouth-watering combination for Jeff Shi to consider.

Sorinola could be Rangers’ next Barisic

Rangers have been linked with MK Dons left-back Matthew Sorinola recently and he could prove to be the next Borna Barisic in Steven Gerrard’s side should he arrive at Ibrox this summer.

According to TEAMtalk, Rangers – along with their Old Firm rivals, Leeds United, Bournemouth, Chelsea and Norwich City – have been linked with the 20-year-old, who is set to become a free agent this summer having rejected a contract offer from Russell Martin’s side.

The youngster has been a regular at Stadium MK this season, making 34 appearances in which he has contributed one goal and four assists, which has helped him to a solid 6.51 average rating from WhoScored.

The MK Dons academy graduate has made 46 senior appearances in his career and has predominantly featured as a left wing-back in a five-at-the-back system, which suggests that he can be a real threat going forwards.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/latest-rangers-news-transfer-rumours-and-more-copy-copy” title=“Latest Rangers news, transfer rumours and more from Ibrox!”]

However, he has also played as a left-back on a number of occasions, so with enough guidance and training, he could easily adapt to become an attacking left-back in Gerrard’s four-at-the-back system at Rangers.

His attacking prowess, which has seen him average 0.7 shots and 0.8 key passes per game in League One this season, suggests that he could be an excellent long-term heir for the similarly attack-minded Barisic at Ibrox.

The Croatia international has contributed seven goals and a remarkable 32 assists in just 112 appearances for Gerrard’s side and has become renowned for his crossing ability.

Considering that WhoScored describe Sorinola’s strengths as key passes and dribbling, he could definitely be a huge threat down the left-hand side for Rangers in the future in a similar vein to Barisic.

[freshpress-quiz id=“593776″]

The youngster, who MK Dons manager Martin described as “excellent” back in 2019, is now available on a free transfer, so Rangers sporting director Ross Wilson should work quickly to try and bring him to Ibrox this summer, as it could prove to be a superb signing from both a footballing and financial perspective.

Pakistan beat Leicestershire by an innings in two days

Leicestershire were sent spinning to an innings defeat in two days as the Pakistan tourists warmed up for next week’s Second Test at Old Trafford in impressive style at Grace Road

Neville Foulger25-May-2001Leicestershire were sent spinning to an innings defeat in two days as the Pakistan tourists warmed up for next week’s Second Test at Old Trafford in impressive style at Grace Road. After being routed by pace in their first innings, Leicestershire were undone by spinners Saqlain Mushtaq and Mushtaq Ahmed in the second. They were bowled out for 172, losing their last eight wickets for 84 runs to crash to defeat by an innings and 26 runs.Such a comprehensive defeat did not seem on the cards at the tea interval when Leicestershire were 72 for two after a stand of 71 between Iain Sutcliffe and 20-year-old debutant Ashley Wright. But when Wright was out just before tea for 30 and Sutcliffe was bowled round his legs by Saqlain soon after the interval, the collapse began. Both Saqlain and Mushtaq weaved their magic and the inexperienced home side were not up to the challenge.Saqlain took four for 37 in 18.3 overs and Mushtaq four for 41 in 15 overs. Darren Stevens made 24 before being bowled by a fizzer from Saqlain, and wicket-keeper Neil Burns hit an unbeaten 28.There was no denying the tourists however, although they would surely have preferred a tougher challenge ahead of the Test. But at least their bowlers are firing on all cylinders. The same cannot be said of their batsmen. They will have been disappointed to lose their last six wickets for 49 runs as the Leicestershire attack stuck to their task and bowled them out for 294.Yousuf Youhana batted well to make 80 before being last man out and Faisal Iqbal top scored with 83. The signs are that England could face a tougher task at Old Trafford than they did at Lord’s.

Update emerges on the future of Windass

Darren Moore’s Sheffield Wednesday midfielder Josh Windass has not received any contact regarding a summer move.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by Yorkshire Live, who claim that, despite rumours suggesting that Cardiff City had contacted the Owls midfielder regarding a summer transfer, no such contact has been made with the 27-year-old.

In fact, in a recent interview with Football League World, Dean Windass, Josh’s father, claimed that the speculation surrounding his future is frustrating the £1.44 million-rated man, who would rather just concentrate on Wednesday’s fight for Championship survival.

He said: “It’s sort of annoyed him really, because it was before Saturday’s game – probably one of the biggest games of the season – and he is getting all these clubs linked that they’re going to sign him if Sheffield Wednesday go down. He’s not that sort of lad to think about that and he was focused on the job on Saturday.”

Fans will be buzzing

So far this season, Windass has been one of the few positives at Sheffield Wednesday, with the midfielder leading both the club’s scoring and assist charts, with nine and five respectively, as well as creating seven big chances and making an average of 0.8 key passes per game, seeing the 27-year-old average a SofaScore match rating of 6.80 over his 40 Championship appearances – ranking him as the Owls’ seventh-best performer in the second tier.

As such, the news that there has been, as of yet, no approach for the £10,000-per-week star’s services ahead of the summer transfer window is likely to be delightful for both Darren Moore and fans of the club to hear, as it would very much appear as if Windass will be crucial to any success the club may have going forwards, be that in the Championship or League One.

Having said this, if Wednesday do indeed drop down to the third tier of English football following their crunch match with Derby County this Saturday, it is not a difficult scenario to imagine that a number of clubs will go on to submit a concrete offer for the player whom the former Rangers star, Colin West, dubbed “excellent.”

But, for now, it would seem that Windass if fully focused on trying to pull off what would be a great escape with Wednesday, with his success or failure likely to play a huge factor in determining whether or not his future lays at Hillsborough. That should have his manager, and the club’s fans, buzzing.

Rameez Raja evaluates Pakistan Squad

Article: Pakistan Squad assessment

Agha Akbar05-May-2001Rameez Raja, the former Pakistan skipper and now a cricket commentator with a leading sports channel, is extremely popular among television viewers for his knowledgeable and insightful remarks on the game and those who play it. Here are his views on the Pakistani cricketers presently touring England, their strengths and shortcomings, and the special role some of them are expected to play to ensure an unprecedented fourth away series win for the green caps against England.Waqar Younis:
Is temperamentally very strong, a good athlete. He proved to be a very good leader recently in the limited-overs tournament in Sharjah, where his influence on the youngsters was well-appreciated. Nevertheless, the England series would be a huge challenge for him. I’m sure, with a quality outfit at his disposal, he’ll deliver.
This is his last tour of England, where he was hugely successful in two previous visits, in 1992 and 1996; both campaigns ended up in Pakistan triumphs. That should inspire him to make it three in a row – and if that transpired it would be Pakistan’s fourth series victory in England on the trot. He is keen to do well, both with the cherry and as skipper.Saeed Anwar:
He is the cornerstone in Pakistan’s batting, for two reasons: One, he opens the innings and second, he is an experienced campaigner. His role as an opener is going to be vital for Pakistan, especially in the month of May when there would be lot of seam and swing. His job would be to stay at the wicket and inspire others to do the same.
A natural strokemaker, when in full flow, Saeed Anwar is a treat to watch. He has been in good nick lately, and if he carries that form to the Test series it would be great for Pakistan.Mohammad Wasim:
He has got the temperament; he showed it in the West Indies last year. Though he has played sporadically for Pakistan, but he has been around for a while. Although he is technically limited, but a good player in seaming conditions. One expects him to deliver partnering Saeed Anwar as opener.Inzamam-ul-Haq:
Inzamam is one of the leading batsmen on the circuit. He has simply been outstanding for Pakistan in the last couple of years. Hopefully, he can carry that good form into this series. Along with Saeed Anwar, he is the key to Pakistan’s success. And if the two of them fired in tandem, they between them have the ability to bat England out of the series.Yousuf Youhana:
A very very talented and stylish batsman. According to some pundits he is the kind who could in due course rewrite all Pakistan records. He too has a very important role to play, and that is to first build a partnership with Inzamam and then carry on from there and make the latter half of the Pakistan innings rally around him. He must stay in the middle for long periods and keep partnerships going with Abdur Razzaq, Rashid Latif and Wasim Akram.Younis Khan:
He played very well in New Zealand. When everybody seemed to struggle with movement and extra spin on those tracks, he came to grips with it and put up a few good scores. A rising star, Pakistan would be hoping that he carries on in the same vein. A youngster with a lot of potential, he has on occasions been flashy. That is one flaw that he would need to work on.Faisal Iqbal:
Faisal has got talent, though at this point it looks a bit limited. But he is very young, and it is too early to judge him. One thing, which is really good in him, is his temperament. He is very gritty, plays within himself, and thinks about the game. He is expected to be a permanent fixture in the Pakistan team.Rashid Latif:
He was included in the squad because of his experience, and I’m sure he would do well.
A wicket-keeper in the classic mould, he is more than a handy batsman. Expected to be a good influence on the team as well.Wasim Akram:
He has been a champion all-rounder, and the conditions in England would suit his bowling, especially in the month of May. A lot would depend on him in case Shoaib Akhtar is doubtful. However, he has to get along with his team mates and whatever has happened in the past has to be buried.Shoaib Akhtar:
The fastest bowler in the world, he is a huge draw card. He brings to the game an element of excitement and thrill, but he has to make sure that he improves on his fitness standards. It is the requirement of the team, and important for his own career as well. There is no doubt about his ability; he can get his side crucial breakthroughs and create that element of fear and panic in the opposition.Abdur Razzaq:
A very smooth operator. Never would you find him in a hurry or under pressure. He has improved tremendously as a bowler. Remember, he batted at one-down in the ’99 World Cup in England and succeeded when others had failed. As a bowler, he is exceptionally accurate, deceptively fast and can also bowl reverse swing. All in all, a good all-rounder.Mohammad Sami:
Sami is a rising star on the fast-bowling horizon. He bowled with a lot of pace and showed good temperament at Sharjah, where wickets tended to favour batsmen. If he could get his line and length right in England, he could prove quite a handful.Saqlain Mushtaq:
An ideal bowler in one-day cricket. His Test record is not as exciting as his one-day record, but with his experience, and also because of his long stint with Surrey, he is expected to take maximum advantage of his familiarity with English conditions.Mushtaq Ahmed:
It is generally believed that England and New Zealand do not read the leg-spinners well. His inclusion primarily has been made keeping that point in view. It, however, remains to be seen how effective he is because in the last couple of years he has not really been at his best. If he gets his line right, there would be a bit of spin for him because the wickets would have some moisture. So, if played, he might be useful for the side.Azhar Mahmood:
Of late he has been on the injured list a couple of times. So it is good to see this all-rounder of great potential back in the side. Three Test hundreds are an eloquent testimony of his talent as a batsman, and his bowling is suited to English conditions.Imran Farhat:
I personally have great liking for this left-handed youngster. He has got that basic technique of back-and-across, waits for the ball to come to him rather than lunging forward like most of the Pakistani batsmen. He has loads of talent, but again his shot selection needs improvement. He has got to understand the importance of building an innings – it is vital that you do when you are an opener. Maybe he should pick up a thing or two from Saeed Anwar.Saleem Elahi:
Saleem Elahi has once again had a tremendous domestic season, and that weighed in his favour at the time of selection. I’m sure that he would do well if he continues in this form. He has a tendency of opening the face of the bat and running the ball to the gully area. I’m afraid that is not the right technique to play on the seaming tracks. If he improves in this area he might do well.

Everton fans hail team news vs Arsenal

Lots of Everton fans have been left to hail some early teams before they take the trip to the Emirates Stadium to play Arsenal in the Premier League.

Speaking in his pre-game press conference ahead of the match against the Gunners, Carlo Ancelotti has confirmed that Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Yerry Mina, Bernard, Fabian Delph and Andre Gomes are all back and available to play in the game.

The Goodison Park faithful had been suffering from a lack of squad depth in recent matches and so it is a big boost to have as many as five players back for them to bolster up both the first XI and the squad.

The Merseyside club will especially be boosted by the return of their talisman Calvert-Lewin, who will of course hope to continue his fine goal-scoring season when he plays Mikel Arteta’s side.

Everton flop Jutkiewicz reaches landmark

When Everton raided Swindon Town for their academy graduate Lukas Jutkiewicz in 2007, few may have forseen how poorly things would turn out for the striker at Goodison Park under David Moyes.

But after a nomadic career having failed to make the grade on Merseyside, the Polish forward found a home for himself at Birmingham City in 2017 on the back of an initial loan spell.

Life at St. Andrew’s has been good for Jutkiewicz in most, and on Sunday he reached a landmark by making the 500th senior appearance of his career in a 1-0 win over Rotherham United that moved Lee Bowyer’s side nine points clear of the relegation zone.

It was 15-years ago this month that Jutkiewicz made his senior debut for Swindon in a 2-1 defeat to Swansea City, just two weeks after his 17th birthday, but his efforts as the season petered out failed to prevent the Robins from being relegated to the fourth-tier.

Yet it was in League Two that Jutkiewicz caught the eye of Everton and Moyes, who agreed to hand the then 18-year-old a lucrative contract as part of a £1m move, after an impressive campaign with five goals and two assists in 33 appearances despite only starting 13 times.

Action was much harder to secure at Goodison Park, even with Moyes claiming in 2008 that the Southampton-born centre-forward “is certainly in our thoughts” after showing progress behind the scenes, with the only appearance of his Toffees career lasting just four minutes.

Jutkiewicz featured on the bench in dribs and drabs between his arrival in 2007, loan spells with Plymouth Argyle, Huddersfield Town and Motherwell before eventually leaving in 2010 when sold to Coventry City. But his only outing for Everton came as a late substitute when replacing Tim Cahill in a 3-0 win at home to Sunderland in December 2008.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/latest-everton-news%2c-views-and-gossip” title=”Latest Everton news, views and gossip!”]

His time with Coventry failed to make Everton regret his departure with Jutkiewicz only scoring 18 goals in 69 games across all competitions before joining Middlesbrough, where he would again attract Premier League interest – this time from Burnley.

The Clarets spent £2.5m on Jutkiewicz in 2014 but would fail to see the forward find the back of the net in any of his 35 appearances, but did offer three assists – including one in a 3-1 defeat to Everton to equalise after Samuel Eto’o had opened the scoring.

That was the closest Jutkiewicz has ever come to making the Blues regret his exit, having gone on to round out the first 500 games of his senior career by establishing himself as a solid if not remarkable Championship centre-forward with Birmingham.

In 213 games across all competitions for the second city side, the now 32-year-old has hit 51 goals and offered 23 assists, with personal-best league returns of 14 goals in the 2018/19 and 2019/20 campaigns.

Jutkiewicz currently has five goals in 39 games this term as the £10,000-per-week frontman enters the twilight years of his career as a two-time Premier League flop, having failed to fulfil the promise that first caught Everton and Moyes’ attention more than a decade ago.

Man Utd told to sell de Gea this summer

Former Manchester United man Keith Gillespie has told Football FanCast that the club can afford to sell David de Gea this summer.

De Gea has been with United since 2011 and has gone on to make 434 appearances for the club.

However, this season, he has lost his place after a period of absence, with Dean Henderson playing in the last three top-flight games.

Henderson spent last season on loan at Sheffield United, enjoying an exceptional season, and has even won a cap for England.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has utilised the 24-year-old in various cup competitions, playing in the FA Cup, the League Cup, and the Europa League.

Gillespie believes Henderson is good enough to step into de Gea’s shoes and believes that, as a result, United can cash in on the Spain international this summer.

He has been linked with a move away, with The Sun claiming earlier this month that PSG could make a summer swoop.

Speaking exclusively to FFC, Gillespie said: “De Gea has been fantastic for the period that he’s been there, I think now would probably be a good time to cash in and let him go.

“You have got somebody waiting to come in there, somebody who’s playing now, in Henderson. He did fantastically well last year at Sheffield United. He’s biding his time and when he has had to play, he’s done really well.

“He’s a young English goalkeeper, he could force his way in and be England number one if he gets that regular starting place at Man United.”

De Gea has enjoyed a storied career at Old Trafford, winning the Premier League, the FA Cup, the League Cup and the Europa League, while he has also been voted the Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year four times during his United career.

He added: “David de Gea has been fantastic and I think four out of five seasons he won Man United’s Player of the Year, but that shows you how much work he had to do.

“That’s not something that would have happened under Alex Ferguson!”
