South African spinners deserve more respect – Harris

South African left-arm spinner Paul Harris has spoken out against the criticism spinners get in the country if they don’t perform to expectations

Cricinfo staff12-Feb-2010Paul Harris, South Africa’s left-arm spinner, has spoken out against the criticism spinners get in his country if they don’t perform to expectations. Harris, whose four wickets played an important role in the innings victory against India in Nagpur, said the negative press in the recent home series against England had upset him.Harris began the four-Test series with a five-wicket haul in Centurion but he took only four wickets in the next two games. He was dropped for the final game at the Wanderers, which South Africa won to square the series 1-1.”South African spinners are always under the spotlight and I thought my treatment was a little harsh,” Harris told . “I took a five-for in the first Test against England (at Centurion) and then two Tests later everyone’s calling for me to be dropped. It was a bit disappointing considering what I have done for the team in the last few years, the results I have produced.”England played me well and I lost some consistency, which irritated me. In fact, it really upset me.”In the Nagpur Test, Harris sparked India’s collapse in the first innings when he foxed MS Dhoni with sharp turn from the rough from over the wicket. Dhoni shaped to leave the ball but it lobbed off his glove to the keeper. In the second innings, he got the vital wicket of Sachin Tendulkar, bowled while trying to sweep. Harris said the strategy of bowling on the rough outside the leg stump was paying off.”It’s probably not the most fashionable plan, but frustrating them out was the key. It’s more a patience game, but the Indian batsmen have big egos against spin,” Harris said. “They will kick it away for five overs but then try something in the sixth over. You know they’re going to come at you, especially because of all the media hype.”My strengths are consistency and patience, and I get a bit of bounce. My job is to keep the batsmen quiet, keep it as tight as possible and make it hard for them to score. My skill is being able to bowl over the wicket. It’s something you have to learn if you’re going to do well in Test cricket. It wouldn’t be your first-choice line of attack and if the pitch is doing a lot you’d go around the wicket. But going over, they don’t get runs and you get the odd wicket. Getting a batsman out caught at deep square leg is as good as having him caught at slip.”He said he wasn’t aware the Indians were practicing the leg-stump line in Nagpur. Were they? That’s a surprise,” he told . “But look, they could not score off me because of the situation. You can’t bat for three days under pressure. They are known to be aggressive. I would imagine they would be a bit more aggressive in their planning.”However, the bigger matchwinner was Dale Steyn, who took ten wickets. “It was Dale Steyn’s Test match. He showed how good he is and it was pretty spectacular taking 10 wickets on that deck,” he said. “He makes the spinner’s job easier, because I’m talking to the batsmen, telling them that if they don’t come after me, Dale’s going to take their heads off later on.”The tour was preceded by the drama of coach Mickey Arthur’s sudden resignation and the revamping of the selection panel. Harris said that contrary to predictions that the off-field events would distract the team on tour, it only made them a closer, fighting unit.”I hold Mickey in the very highest esteem, he was the guy who gave me a chance and backed me. He’s up there with the best coaches and a champion man, he’s sent me about a million text messages since we’ve been in India,” Harris said.”But it’s probably true that a change is as good as a holiday and it’s meant the players are now trying to impress the new management, you can see it in the intensity. When we are apprehensive about something, we stick together, it’s a great South African trait. The boys are a lot closer, we’re all real good mates and that’s made the new management’s job easier. I have to say Corrie van Zyl (the new coach) has been very good and Kepler Wessels (batting consultant) has been superb.”

Chanderpaul to miss opening match of four day competition

West Indies batsman Shivnarine Chanderpaul has been ruled out of Guyana’s opening match of the WICB four day competition after failing to recover from a finger injury he sustained on the tour of Australia last month

Cricinfo staff06-Jan-2010West Indies batsman Shivnarine Chanderpaul has been ruled out of Guyana’s opening match of the regional four day competition after failing to recover from a finger injury he sustained on the tour of Australia last month. He will sit out the second-round match against Trinidad & Tobago in Antigua next week, after Guyana drew a bye for the first round in Jamaica. Vishal Singh has been named as his replacement.Chanderpaul’s recovery time was expected to be four weeks but he informed the selectors that the treatment on the injury was inadequate and as a result, the ligament had not fully healed.Despite the presence of captain Ramnaresh Sarwan, Narsingh Deonarine and Travis Dowlin, Chanderpaul’s stability will be missed in the middle order against a strong Trinidadian lineup.Meanwhile, Singh has played just the one first-class match, against Barbados at Providence last April, and has been in tremendous form for his domestic side Demerara.Guyana will be hoping for a better showing this year after finishing bottom of the standings on 33 points last season.

Man City fans react to Vlahovic update

Manchester City are back in for striker Dusan Vlahovic and are willing to meet Fiorentina’s asking price.

That’s according to La Repubblica, as relayed by Get Italian Football News, which has duly had a number of City fans talking on social media.

Pep Guardiola reportedly ‘fell in love’ with the 21-year-old over the summer after a move for Tottenham’s Harry Kane failed to materialise.

Rumours have cooled in recent months, with the likes of Arsenal and Juventus linked with the Serbia international. The latest update suggests that Vlahovic isn’t convinced by the project with Arsenal and prefers a move to Juventus.

City are now reportedly willing to meet the demands for the striker, though, with the January transfer window just weeks away.

City fans react

Well-known City outlet @City_Xtra shared the update regarding Vlahovic on Twitter on Thursday.

Here is what these fans had to say in reply, with one labelling the news on the striker, who has scored 14 times in 16 matches this season, as ‘fantastic’.

Murali and Fernando out of ODI series

Muttiah Muralitharan and Dilhara Fernando have been ruled out of the ODI series in India because of finger injuries.

Cricinfo staff16-Dec-2009Sri Lanka’s hopes of coming back from a 1-0 deficit in the ODI series against India have taken a hit with Muttiah Muralitharan and Dilhara Fernando being ruled out of the remaining four games because of finger injuries. Mulalitharan picked up his injury during the final Test in Mumbai as a result of which he missed the two Twenty20 matches as well as the first ODI in Rajkot. Fernando did not play in the Tests, but figured in the shorter formats and hurt his finger while attempting a return catch from MS Dhoni in Rajkot.”We have decided to rest Murali from the one-day series to allow him to recover fully from the finger injury and to be available for future tournaments,” Brendon Kuruppu, manager of the Sri Lankan team, told PTI today. “Fernando hurt his finger during that [the Rajkot] match. His replacement will be announced shortly.”While they are yet to decide on a substitute for Fernando, Sri Lanka will bolster their spin attack with two untested offspinners, Muthumudalige Pushpakumara and Suraj Randiv, who will join the squad in time for the second ODI in Nagpur on December 18. Pushpakumara was part of the Twenty20 squad and played in the first game, Sri Lanka’s lone success so far on tour, before returning home. Randiv was a part of Sri Lanka’s Test squad against Pakistan earlier this year, but is yet to play for the country.Kuruppu also expressed hope that Lasith Malinga , who missed the first ODI due to injury, will be available for the second match.

Bielsa handed major Leeds injury boost

Leeds United have been handed a timely injury boost ahead of their return to Premier League action this weekend…

What’s the latest?

According to Football Insider, left-back Junior Firpo has been given the all-clear to feature against Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday, handing Marcelo Bielsa a huge boost.

It’s thought that the 25-year-old, who signed for £12.8m from Barcelona in the summer, has fully recovered from muscle injury picked up on the training pitch and is now in contention to start in north London.

He has not featured for the senior side since early October – a 1-0 win over Watford – and has missed their last four league outings, as a result.

Major boost

This will be a major source of encouragement for the Argentine head coach, not least because he’s a huge admirer of the Brazilian.

“When Junior manages to have the rhythm the Premier League imposes on you, he’s going to be a full-back that shines a lot,” he told reporters at the end of September (via LeedsLive). “He has all the physical and technical resources to generate moments of very good football.”

Leeds were already light on options in the left-back role and in his absence, a host of players have had to deputies, the latest of which being towering central defensive colossus Pascal Struijk.

The 6 foot 3 Dutchman was deployed out wide against Leicester City as Stuart Dallas had to cover for Jamie Shackleton, who was also injured, on the other wing.

And even then, the 22-year-old academy graduate is filling in for vice-captain Luke Ayling, who has been on the treatment table since mid-September.

As you can see, Bielsa has had to deal with numerous injury problems, so he will certainly be delighted by the return of Firpo this weekend, even more so as Antonio Conte’s system utilises the wide areas to great effect.

The Yorkshiremen will appear a lot stronger in these positions with a natural full-back available.

Firpo’s return is certainly a major boost and Bielsa will be buzzing to have him back.

Everton have a gem in Stanley Mills

Everton’s fast start under Rafael Benitez has come to a sudden halt in recent weeks, but there’s still plenty of reasons for the Merseyside outfit to remain hopeful.

With a new stadium on the way, young talents such as Richarlison, Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Ben Godfrey on the books and a proven winner at the helm in Benitez, it could be an exciting few years for the Toffees.

However, perhaps nothing gets the supporters quite as excited as a new player rising through the ranks and graduating from the academy into the first team squad. Stanley Mills could be the next Everton hopeful to do just that.

The winger has been in Everton’s youth system since the age of 14 after moving from Leeds United and is described as a “speedy and skilful dribbler with impressive ball-striking ability” on the club’s official website.

During 2020/21, Mills became a mainstay in the under-18 side before being promoted to the Blues’ under-23s in their penultimate game of the season, marking his debut with a goal in a 5-0 victory at Southampton.

His impressive exploits earned the youngster, who is the son of former Leeds United and England defender Danny Mills, his first professional contract, signing a two-year deal back in July.

A further profile piece describes the right-sided forward as a “quick, intelligent and composed midfield player”, adding that he had to battle back from a serious knee injury in order to continue his progression.

The teenager has continued to take his game to new levels in the current campaign. Since making his stay with David Unsworth’s under-23s permanent, Mills has not looked back.

In 12 appearances for the young Toffees, he has bagged two goals and added a further two assists, illustrating his top-class potential.

Only time will tell if he has what it takes to make the step up to Premier League football, but the early signs suggest that Benitez could unearth another Everton gem in Mills over the coming years.

Wolves fans don’t like Valencia rumour

A number of Wolves supporters have reacted negatively to a transfer rumour linking the club with a move for Fenerbahce forward Enner Valencia.

The 32-year-old is known to fans of the Premier League, having had spells at West Ham and Everton in the past, but he was not a prolific player in England, netting just 11 times in 75 top-flight appearances.

Valencia is now plying his trade at Fenerbahce, where he has scored two goals in 10 Turkish Super Lig appearances this season, as well as twice in three Europa League games.

According to CNN Turkey [via Talking Wolves on Twitter], Wolves are keen on completing a move for the Ecuadorian, potentially bringing him to the Midlands in the January transfer window.

However, at 32 Valencia doesn’t represent the future, and he may not be a player who excites Wolves fans too much given his far from stellar Premier League record.

That certainly appears to be the case on Twitter, with these supporters providing their thoughts on the club’s links with a player who one fan dismissed as a ‘West Ham reject’.

Newcastle transfer news on Guendouzi

Newcastle United are reportedly now ‘very interested’ in signing Matteo Guendouzi for Eddie Howe.

The Lowdown: Howe ‘close’

It has been reported that Howe is now ‘close’ to becoming the next manager at St. James’ Park, although it is expected that Graeme Jones will take charge of their game away at Brighton and Hove Albion in the Premier League on Saturday evening.

It means that the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) consortium can now get on with their plans for the January transfer window, in which they will surely be looking to do a few deals in order to try and help them avoid relegation down to the Championship.

The Tyneside club have just four points and no wins from their first 10 matches in the top flight so far this term, sitting in 19th place, just above Norwich City (Premier League).

The Latest: Guendouzi interest

As per Foot Mercato, the North East club are now ‘very interested’ in signing Guendouzi for Howe.

However, it may not be easy to lure him away from Marseille, where he is currently on loan at from Arsenal, as he has instantly become a fan favourite because of his ‘fiery character’ and ‘overflowing activity on the pitch’.

Thus, the €11m (£9.4m) option to sign him on a permanent deal looks to have a ‘good chance’ of being activated by the Ligue 1 team.

However, Guendouzi is ‘popular’ amongst the Magpies new KSA owners, and they could still look to sign him from the Gunners next summer, should he not move to Marseille permanently.

The Verdict: Get it done

Guendouzi has been a bit of a revelation since signing for Marseille, coming up with three goals and three assists in the league from midfield (called up to the France national squad for their upcoming FIFA World Cup qualifying games.

Offensively, he is better than what the Toon currently have at their disposal in the middle of the park, averaging more shots (1.3), key passes (1.1) and long balls (2.8) per match than Isaac Hayden, Joe Willock and Sean Longstaff in their respective domestic leagues so far this season, while also recording the highest pass success rate (90.2%) (WhoScored).

What makes Guendouzi stand out from the crowd though is his character, as Alan Shearer once dubbed him a ‘warrior’ while he was playing for Arsenal back in 2019, and this was emphasised in a game away at Brighton and Hove Albion, when his passion and the fire in his belly made him take things a little too far (talkSPORT).

In any side, you need players who will fight for the badge, and there is no doubt that Guendouzi would do that if he moved to NUFC with the crowd behind him.

In other news, find out which ‘amazing’ manager was still in the running before Howe here!

Imagine him & Romero: Spurs eye colossus

Tottenham Hotspur have once again been linked with a move for a Championship defender ahead of the January transfer window…

What’s the word?

According to Football Insider, Spurs boss Nuno Santo is keen to sign Stoke City colossus Harry Souttar, having previously sanctioned a move for him during his time at Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Earlier this month, the same outlet reported that several Premier League clubs were keen to sign the 6 foot 5 giant, who has been watched multiple times by scouts since penning a long-term deal at the bet365 Stadium.

The Lilywhites may need to battle Everton and Aston Villa to his signature, though it still remains to be seen what sort of fee such a deal would command.

Ex-Potters player Mike Pejic believes that Souttar is worth more than £20m, but Transfermarkt currently value him at a lowly £3.6m.

Imagine him and Romero

Heading into the new campaign, Spurs’ backline was quite a contentious topic as they were riddled with inconsistencies and a lack of leadership, whilst they were often let down by numerous individual errors.

The bulk of the defensive armoury still remains in N17 as only Toby Alderweireld departed the club, meaning that the likes of Eric Dier and Davinson Sanchez are still playing matches.

New sporting director Fabio Paratici brought in Cristian Romero from Atalanta and he’s largely looked the part whenever he’s been involved. If he’s to sign permanently, then he could need a long-term partner, and perhaps Souttar can be that man.

The Australia international would hand Nuno height like no other in defence, which could be a scary prospect alongside the ruthless Romero.

He has won an average of 4.6 headers per game in the Championship this term, on top of 1.9 interceptions and two tackles per match, via WhoScored. It’s no wonder his manager Michael O’Neill once claimed that the 23-year-old is a “player blessed with great natural attributes” and “good game intelligence.”

By comparison, no Spurs player has managed more than an average of 3.6 aerials won, with Romero currently the best central defender (2.2) for that aspect.

Meanwhile, Souttar has been likened to players such as Harry Maguire and Virgil van Dijk, who started their careers elsewhere before becoming two of the most recognised centre-backs in the Premier League, so it’s already an early sign that he could follow suit.

Also dubbed a “Rolls-Royce” by former Stoke legend Ryan Shawcross – who himself played well over 300 times in the top-flight – it seems as if Spurs could be onto something with the 23-year-old Nuno target.

Paratici must look to seal a move for Souttar when January swings around. It could be a smart decision as the Portuguese looks to build a colossal backline for years to come.

AND in other news, Paratici could seal Spurs’ biggest signing since Son with “complete” £27m-rated beast…

Andrew Symonds’ domestic future remains unclear after he told Queensland he did not want a new contract

Brydon Coverdale25-Jun-2009Andrew Symonds’ future at domestic level remains uncertain after he told Queensland Cricket he did not want a contract for the 2009-10 season. Symonds has still not decided whether he will be available for the Bulls next summer and if so, whether his involvement will be limited to the short formats.Since losing his Cricket Australia deal and being sent home from the ICC World Twenty20, Symonds has been enjoying life away from cricket, including playing rugby against some retired stars. He plans to speak to Queensland closer to the start of the season to decide on any possible involvement in their 2009-10 campaign.Symonds was one of a string of high-profile absentees from Queensland’s new contract list with the veteran batsman Clinton Perren dropped along with the left-arm fast bowler Scott Brant.
