Should Tottenham be alienating him like this?

It’s safe to say Emmanuel Adebayor isn’t the most popular figure at White Hart Lane, or for that matter at any Premier League ground. The Togo international has a knack for rubbing people up the wrong way, having failed to make a home for himself at Arsenal, Manchester City, Real Madrid and now Tottenham.

Last season’s penalty miss in the Europa League semi-final is probably the image that lives most in the memory for Lilywhites fans, and Adebayor’s efforts last season, or rather lack of effort, eradicated the popularity he received for his 17 goal-haul in his first campaign with Spurs, whilst he was still on loan from City.

[cat_link cat=”tottenham” type=”tower”]

The poor showings last term lead to Andre Villas-Boas and Daniel Levy souring various potential suitors for the striker’s services over the summer, but with Adebayor refusing to leave his dwellings in North London, he now finds himself as an excluded member of the first team sent away to train with Tottenham’s development squad after returning from his native Togo on compassionate leave last week.

But should AVB be so wilfully exiling Adebayor in such an ungracious and humiliating fashion? Granted, the Togo forward’s attitude has never been what you’d call exceptionally professional, but he could still have a role to play at White Hart Lane.

Spurs splashed out a whopping £28million on Roberto Soldado this summer in a record-breaking deal for the Lilywhites, and the Spaniard has so far this season featured in all four Premier League fixtures, netting twice in the process. But even so, the strike force is still Tottenham’s weakest department in terms of depth, especially without Adebayor.

Jermain Defoe has proved time and time again in his career that he’s capable of netting around ten goals a season, whether off the bench or as a regular starter. But if both Soldado and Defoe were to suffer serious injury, then Tottenham’s striking hopes in the final third would depend upon youngsters Harry Kane and John Obika, or else winger-forwards Nacer Chadli and Erik Lamela will have to be utilised in less familiar striking roles.

It’s hardly what you’d call Champions League material, especially whilst Liverpool can boast Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge, Chelsea Samuel Eto’o, Fernando Torres and Demba Ba, and the two Manchester clubs have four strikers all of whom would probably be starting on a regular basis at any other Premier League club. Moreover, a lack of options up front was Tottenham’s biggest flaw last season – if they’d had another in-form striker in the books, that cutting edge could have eclipsed the one point gap between Spurs and local rivals Arsenal.

Additionally, regardless of last season, there’s no doubt that Adebayor is a high quality player. He’s plied his trade at one of Europe’s most prestigious clubs in Real Madrid, and two Premier League title-winning outfits in Arsenal and Manchester City. His time in England has brought a decent record of 83 goals and 37 assists in 196 league outings, and the season before last he finished up with an astonishing 17 goals and 11 assists in 33 games from his partnership with Jermain Defoe.

And the England striker agrees that Tottenham are better with Adebayor’s influence than without it, telling reporters two days ago; “I don’t think it [Adebayor’s exclusion] helps the team, to be honest. Someone like Mani, he’s a great player and has played for some of the top clubs in the world and is someone that we’re going to need. We will need his goals and what he brings to the team. He’s keeping himself fit, he’s a happy guy, he loves his football, and hopefully he’ll be back soon with the team.”

But of course, the issue with Adebayor has always been his poor attitude rather than his talent. He’s made it quite clear more than once in his career that securing his next pay cheque is his sole motivation, and his decision to not leave Tottenham in the summer was undoubtedly influenced by his inability to receive a parallel level of pay at another club.

So AVB’s thinking of excluding Adebayor from the first team is more than understandable, considering after moving permanently to Spurs from Manchester City his effort levels tanked completely. Rather than giving an overpaid has-been another shot he doesn’t deserve, the 29 year-old’s third choice striking role could go to one of Tottenham’s hot young prospects, such as Harry Kane who briefly impressed on loan to Leicester last season.

However, is it that inconceivable that at some point in the coming year Spurs will need Adebayor’s influence? Whether he’s utilised as a substitute or a starter, he undoubtedly possesses the quality to find the net, whilst his height, power and ability to protect the ball also provides a vital variation from the styles of Jermain Defoe and Roberto Soldado, which could be an incredibly useful tool for Spurs if used on the right occasion in the right way – namely when the Lilywhites are chasing a last minute goal and have to pump the ball into the box.

Getting the best out of the Togo striker has always been a question of the right motivation, but it will be a lot harder for Villas-Boas to get a positive reaction out of Adebayor now that the Spurs management have made it clear that he’s an unwanted member of the White Hart Lane roster.

I’m not suggesting Adebayor should be taking Roberto Soldado’s place in the first team any time soon, or even Jermain Defoe’s on the subs bench. But at some point in the season, just as with last season, there will be a point where Spurs will end up relying upon their unwanted striker. It could be for ten minutes, a full 90 minutes or ten games. And it does neither the player, the rest of the team or Andre Villas-Boas any favours by exiling him in the reserves.

Should the Tottenham management be alienating Emmanuel Adebayor?

Liverpool ‘terrific’ despite defeat says Rodgers

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers claimed his side were “terrific” despite slipping to a 1-0 Europa League loss against Anzhi Makhachkala.

In a close encounter Lacina Traore’s terrific effort on the stroke of half-time proved to be decisive.

A young Reds side enjoyed plenty of possession but failed to find the equalising goal.

Despite this, Rodgers was positive about his side’s display:

“Tactically our concentration was very good. We controlled the game for 44 minutes and 50 seconds of the first half.” He is quoted by SkySports.

“We made a bad mistake and got punished and that is the level.

“Some of the young players were terrific and we are disappointed not to have got something from it.

“I thought the performance level was good on a difficult pitch but I thought the players played the system tactically very well.

“We just find ourselves unfortunate not to get something from a very difficult place.”

The likes of Conor Coady, Jon Flanagan and Adam Morgan were all handed a first-team opportunity, as Rodgers left many of his established stars back on Merseyside:

“Not at all. I think that is a little disrespectful to the players who are here.” The Northern Irishman responded when asked if his team missed their big names.

“They have been magnificent and I thought they did really well and we just got punished for a mistake.

“That led to us losing the game but I don’t think it was anything to do with Suarez, Gerrard, Joe Allen, Martin Skrtel or Daniel Agger not being here.

“It was just one of those things. We will take it as a team, we are disappointed but there are so many positives from tonight.”

Powerful striker Traore scored the only goal of the game during the first-half, rounding Sebastian Coates before beating Brad Jones.

Tottenham look to trigger £15m clause & AVB to up ante with transfer bid – Best of THFC

Amidst a summer of newly harvested optimism at White Hart Lane defeat there was an air of disappointment about Spurs flat performance in their opening game of the Premier League campaign. Andre Villas-Boas’ arrival at the club has certainly lifted spirits in the wake of missing out on the Champions League last season and Harry Redknapp’s subsequent departure as a result. However defeat on Tyneside gave an indication as to the job Villas-Boas has on his hands to guide Spurs back into the top-four. The addition of Emmanuel Adebayor on a permanent basis will provide the Portuguese tactician with a major boost as he continues to explore different avenues to strengthen his attack. The Togo international struck 17 goals during an impressive season-long loan spell at the North London club and will be expected to fill the lone striker role that Jermaine Defoe struggled to fulfil last week despite getting his name on the scoresheet at St James’ Park. With the pieces slowly falling into place for Villas-Boas getting that first win on the board is now the number one priority.

Assou-Ekotto gives his backing to Brad Friedel

Tottenham defender Benoit Assou-Ekotto has stated that new signing Hugo Lloris will have a tough task in breaking into the White Hart Lane first team.

Andre Villas-Boas’ men signed the France international from Lyon on transfer deadline day, but the Portuguese coach is believed to be set to back Brad Friedel to continue in goal ahead of the new man.

Lloris is said to be disappointed by the fact that he could have to play second fiddle to the ageing American stopper, with the new man ready to sit down and talk with Villas-Boas after the international break.

Despite the ability of Lloris, Assou-Ekotto has stated that the French goalkeeper is not guaranteed a place in the north London outfit’s starting XI.

“It won’t be easy for him because there is competition,” the full-back told French radio station RMC, translated to English by The Daily Mail.

“No 1 keeper in the French team or not, he will have to fight to get the position in the team.

“We currently have a keeper that doesn’t make any mistakes, who is very well-known in Great Britain.

“To start I believe Lloris will be No 2. If our keeper doesn’t make any mistakes there is no reason to change,” the African concluded.

How long before Manchester United turn the corner?

Manchester United failed to kick on from their two previous wins in the Champions League and Premier League, showing once again on Tuesday night just how big the chasm is between themselves and their local rivals.

David Moyes’ side were lifeless and generally looked well out of their depth. Their opposition Manchester City, were rampant. The 3-0 score line could have been greater had David De Gea not been on hand to prevent Edin Dzeko from grabbing his second soon after the opener.

United’s wins against Olympiakos and West Ham leading up to the Manchester derby gave a better account of the opposition than it did of Moyes and his side. Better teams would have knocked United out of the Champions League last week, while West Ham simply failed to show up this past Saturday.

United’s home defeat to their neighbours was a bitter reminder of just how far the club have fallen. Juan Mata, labelled as the figure to help turn around United’s disastrous campaign, looked well short of his former self; the player who had displayed such comfort and confidence over the past two seasons in the blue of Chelsea. De Gea’s expression said it best when Dzeko was put through by David Silva: where was the protection ahead of him? As for Danny Welbeck and Tom Cleverley, both are simply not cut out for this level. Premier League, yes, but not as a first-team regulars of a club of United’s stature.

Wayne Rooney, amidst all the criticism he and the club have received since he penned an extension to his contract, was one of only two bright lights for United – the other being De Gea. Though even the likely future captain could not disguise just how much work was needed to lift United back up to the level of their city rivals and, painfully, their greatest rivals in Liverpool.

All United are doing at this time is breaking unwanted records. Home losses against teams who haven’t won at Old Trafford in decades; trips to Greece, only to lose to their league representative for the first time; a string of home and away defeats against north-west rivals; and now confirmed as the lowest points total for the club since the Premier League’s inception.

It acts as a warning to those who were quick to label United as having found their rhythm and turned a corner following victories last week. It’s also a reminder to the club’s hierarchy that Moyes far from understands the requirements of challenging a league rival one-on-one, even without the added drama of a title race.

Considering the manner of defeats against Manchester City and Liverpool at home, you have to wonder how long, not how much money, it will take before this club are back where they belong at the summit of the Premier League.

Is this La Liga star the right man to anchor Arsenal’s midfield?

According to the Daily Express, Real Madrid star Sami Khedira could be on his way to Arsenal in January.

The German international’s Bernabeu contract is set to expire at the end of the season and the Gunners will feel this is a transfer opportunity they can’t ignore, as their diminutive midfield desperately calls out for some added variety.  A lack of physicality, dynamism and defensive awareness in the middle of the park has already cost Arsenal against Manchester City, Chelsea and Borussia Dortmund this season.

But is Khedira the right man for the job? Is he the imposing midfield anchor Arsenal clearly need? I’ll already admit my suspicions in there being suitable options out there.

There are many misconceptions about Khedira in England, specifically in regards to how and where he plays. He’s commonly referred to as a holding midfielder, but the statistics show this is a rather lazy and inaccurate categorisation.

Take a look at the heat map below for example, taken from Germany’s 7-1 thumping of Brazil during the World Cup semi-final. As you can see, the 27 year-old used his energy and strength more in a box-to-box role, impacting at both ends of the pitch and often pressing the opposition defence to win the ball high up. The deeper, holding role was adopted by Bastian Schweinsteiger instead; likewise, at Real Madrid, that task has more commonly gone to Xabi Alonso, not Khedira, over the last few seasons.

In terms of averages too, the German international’s are way below what you’d expect from even the most ordinary of Premier League defensive midfielders. During the 2012/13 campaign for example, Khedira’ last full one without prolonged injury, he averaged just 1.44 tackles and 1.16 interceptions per match. His pass completion rate was also only 81%. To put that into perspective, Tottenham enforcer Etienne Capoue has averaged three tackles and 3.3 interceptions with a pass completion of 89% this season, and Mathieu Flamini, Arsenal’s most defensive option in midfield, has averaged three tackles and 2.8 interceptions per match this season with a pass completion of 93%.

Khedira offers some enviable traits – athleticism, power and technical quality – but he lacks the discipline, both with and without the ball, and the natural defensive awareness required to anchor a midfield singlehanded, especially one with as many offensive components as Arsenal’s.

Even during his coming-of-age days at Stuttgart and the 2010 World Cup, it was Khedira’s commitment to bursting forward and linking up with the German frontline that made him stand out from the crowd – not his ability to protect the back four.

This is something Arsene Wenger has already commented on; “We were never close to signing [Khedira]. Jack Wilshere is back fit and in midfield we have offensive midfielders and quite a few box-to-box players,” the Arsenal gaffer remarked in August.

Of course, with a Champions League title and a World Cup on his CV, Khedira remains one of the most proven central midfielders in world football. In theory, he has the physical requisites for a more disciplined holding role as well as the quality and intelligence to adapt to it.

But Arsenal have been mucking around with this department for years. Mikel Arteta, although often Pirlo-esque in his ball retention, featured as commonly as a wide man as he did centrally for former club Everton, underlining his fatal flaws as a defensive midfielder in terms of positional awareness and physicality.

Likewise, Mathieu Flamini, certainly a more natural suitor and an astute acquisition on a free transfer, isn’t the calibre of player you’d expect to see starting regularly at a club that’s meant to be challenging for the Premier League title. Even Alex Song proved to be a considerably more progressive option than his 6 foot 2 frame initially suggested, and Wenger now has plans to reinvent the eternally-crocked Abou Diaby as a holding player. In truth, Arsenal haven’t possessed a genuine defensive midfielder since Gilberto Silva -he left the club in 2008.

Especially in a midfield as forward-thinking as Arsenal’s, the Gunners need a specialist as  the anchor; someone who understands the role perfectly, possesses the natural requisites for it, can resultantly organise those around him and isn’t a work-in-progress.

Such a player would solve a couple of headaches for Wenger too – particularly in regards to Mesut Ozil. One can only ponder how much longer the German maestro will be an Arsenal player as he continues to dwindle out wide, but a more assured option behind would allow him licence at No.10 without compromising the shape and sturdiness of the midfield.

Khedira, although the calibre of signing that would impress the fan base and give the aura of a club moving forward – at least, within the realms of the transfer market – is not the solution to Arsenal’s intrinsic midfield flaws. His potential January move would constitute a signing based on reputation, rather than actual need.

واختتم: “والأهلي منتشي بحصوله على أربعة بطولات، ستكون مباراة جيدة، نتمنى أن نرى كرة تليق بالناديين”.

Carter ton helps West Indies A level series

West Indies A squared the series against India A, thanks largely to Jonathan Carter’s 133

Kanishkaa Balachandran in Bangalore17-Sep-2013
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsJonathan Carter’s 133 took West Indies A to a strong total of 279•BCCI

After being beaten hollow on Sunday, West Indies A made as many as three changes to their line-up. At least two of those turned out to be inspired choices as they squared the series by batting India A out of the game. Jonathan Carter, the Barbados allrounder, played an innings that mirrored Yuvraj Singh’s comeback century for its pace and impact – cautious at the start, ballistic towards the end. With this tour serving as a selection trial for the senior team’s tour in November, Carter may well have pushed his case forward.Carter was an unfamiliar face to the current crop of India A bowlers, who were not part of the squad that toured the Caribbean last year. His stand of 131 with Leon Johnson, another player brought in for this game, defined the game for West Indies, pushing the score to 279, which was beyond India to chase.Carter came in at the fall of the second wicket, and his stint may well have ended on 6, had Yusuf Pathan not put down a regulation chance at slip off Shahbaz Nadeem. Yusuf had it covered but the ball popped out and he failed to take it on the rebound. It was the first example of India’s insipid catching and particularly, the ground fielding. This lapse cost India dear.Carter was slow to begin with, scoring at a strike late of 50 and thereabouts. Kirk Edwards found his touch with three boundaries through the off side in one over by Vinay Kumar. The reckless dismissals of Edwards and Andre Russell – both coming straight after hitting sixes – pegged back West Indies, but when the time came for Carter to take charge, he did it with measured aggression. The tactic of attempting to clear the rope off every ball, as Russell did in his 4-ball stint, wasn’t the way forward. Carter was more selective in his strokeplay. After top-edging Vinay down to fine leg, his first convincing boundary came off a sweep off Nadeem. He gained in confidence against the spinners, cutting Yusuf past short third man and pulling when the spinners dropped it short. He was equally comfortable against the pace of Jaydev Unadkat, pulling and whipping him for consecutive boundaries to bring up his fifty. It took 82 balls to get there, and much like Yuvraj’s knock on Sunday, the pace quickened drastically after passing the milestone. What helped Carter progress was the presence of an equally positive Johnson. Johnson too, was let off early – on 7 – but to be fair to Robin Uthappa, it was a tough one-handed chance at slip.Carter was determined to make the best use of the batting Powerplay – taken after 35 overs – carving the ball over extra cover and using his feet against the spinners, one shot nearly cleaning up Pathan and the umpire. Earlier, he survived a run-out chance on 66, when Johnson pushed the ball to cover and sent back Carter who was nearly halfway down the pitch. Unmukt Chand’s throw was wide and Carter was lucky to still be there.Every missed opportunity against Carter came with a price. He lofted Pathan several rows over long-on, lofted Vinay over cover, scythed full tosses from the spinners over deep midwicket. Few of Carter’s slogs looked ungainly. None of the seamers were able to contain him, as he pounced on anything pitched up. The absence of yorkers hurt the Indians, as it did the tourists in the opening game. Carter moved to 99 with a massive six over deep midwicket that nearly landed on the second tier.He reached his century with a single to long-on and in contrast to Yuvraj’s restrained acknowledgement to the crowd, Carter did a leap, roared towards his team-mates and was so caught up in the moment that he failed to turn around to look at his partner. Johnson did the honors by jogging across and embracing his partner.Carter was the beneficiary of two misfields at the rope that resulted in boundaries, reflective of a poor day in the field for India. Carter was eventually lbw playing all around a full delivery from Unadkat for 133. Thanks to his assault, West Indies managed 135 off their last 15 overs.Till this knock, Carter had only one first-class century, but no List A ton to his credit. Did his knock surprise his own team-mates? “Not really,” said his captain Kieran Powell. “Jonathan has generally made starts and we have always been talking to him about going on to make that big score and today he really played a massive innings for the team, especially the situation he was in. Everyone was expecting that from him, and he delivered.”The chase played out in a very similar manner to the opening game, only this time with the teams reversed. The seamers bowled to a plan of bouncing out the young Indian batsmen and Powell later said that he had juggled the bowlers a bit differently and varied his field settings, which ultimately played a part. The upper tier of the western stand was packed – pleasing for a working day – but when Yuvraj and Pathan departed off successive balls, sections of the crowd started filtering out.

‘We’ll be playing our best team’ – Hodge

Big PictureWith a record of 10 successive wins in Jaipur and on the brink of a semi-final spot, Rajasthan Royals are marked favourites against Perth Scorchers.Scorchers, languishing at the bottom of Group A, will be desperate for a turn in form and fortunes. Their first game was washed out and they were thrashed by a belligerent Neil Broom and Ryan ten Doeschate in their previous game. A loss here could significantly worsen their chances of qualifying for the semi-final, making them depend on technicalities and other teams. The match against Otago exposed the fragility and inexperience of the young Scorchers attack. Their batting showed some gumption – reaching 180 for 6 from 11 for 3 – but their bowling was disappointing. Once Otago mounted an assault on the bowling from the 12th over onwards, Scorchers had no one to rein in the run-scoring. Between the 12th and the 20th overs, they conceded less than 15 runs in just one of the nine overs.Royals, on the other hand, have managed to control the latter half of their bowling innings well. They conceded 10 runs or more in an over six times against Lions, of which only two were in the last five overs. Against the more powerful Mumbai Indians line-up, they had only five such overs overall.Perhaps, the most crucial player for Scorchers in this game will be Brad Hogg, who has spent two IPL seasons with Royals. Hogg’s first-hand knowledge of the hosts line-up and the playing conditions in Jaipur could prove invaluable as Scorchers look for a revival. For Royals, the focus will be on consistency and confirming their semi-final place. Their ability to find performers at crucial junctures has been impressive and they’ve benefitted by giving youngsters like Ashok Menaria and Sanju Samson a free rein. Shaun Tait has been sidelined so far with an injury but things are likely to get interesting if he is fit in time to play against his Australian T20 side.Players to watchSimon Katich had a great run with Lancashire in the Friends Life t20, leading up to this tournament. In nine innings, he scored 265 runs at an average of 44.16. As one of the most experienced players in the side, Katich has a clearly-defined role of keeping one end stable as the younger batsmen bat around him.Brad Hodge, with his deadpan style of batting, has reveled in his middle-order role for Royals. He cemented their place in this Champions League with an unbeaten 54 against Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL 2013. Against Lions, he struck a nonchalant 20 runs off the final over to take Royals to a strong total. With Shane Watson alternating between the top and middle order depending on the match situation, Hodge’s presence lends a certain calm to the Royals batting line-up.
