Derby County: Fans slam Kelle Roos

Kelle Roos faltered on two occasions in Derby County’s crucial clash with Swansea City on Saturday afternoon, and fans took to Twitter to express their frustration.

Wayne Rooney’s side took the lead in the first half courtesy of Tom Lawrence, but former Rams forward Morgan Whittaker equalised for Swansea on 63 minutes.

The Athletic’s Derby correspondent Ryan Conway tweeted that Roos ought to have done better.

“It’s a weak header and he just can’t sort his feet out,” he wrote.

Three minutes later, Swansea scored again to complete the turnaround, as Connor Roberts was given acres of space and punished the visitors.

Conway again noted that Roos hadn’t ‘covered himself in glory’ with his attempt at the save.

SofaScore rated Roos’ performance a 6.0, the lowest in the Derby team.

How much will Roos’ errors cost Derby?

A point would have been enough for County to secure survival ahead of the final day of the season.

But now their clash with Sheffield Wednesday at Pride Park next Saturday will be a relegation decider.

They’ll have to avoid defeat to stay in the Championship, and these fans won’t be full of confidence if Roos is in between the sticks…

How the USMNT should line up vs St. Kitts and Nevis in crucial Gold Cup clash: Jalen Neal in defense, Brandon Vazquez up top

After opening the tournament with a draw against Jamaica, B.J. Callaghan may look to alter his team for its second group-stage game

No disrespect to St. Kitts and Nevis, who have earned their right to be at the Gold Cup, but it's safe to say the United States men's national team will be favored on Wednesday night. After surviving to seal a 1-1 draw with Jamaica in the opening game of the tournament, the U.S. will now take on an opponent with a bit less punch, to put it lightly.

This is the Sugar Boys' first-ever Gold Cup, having failed to qualify between 1991 and 2021. Their first game came against Trinidad and Tobago, ending in a 3-0 battering that saw the Soca Warriors jump right to the top of the group.

What we're getting at here is that the USMNT will be heavy, heavy favorites, which means this may be the time to rotate a little bit after a real battle with Jamaica. B.J. Callaghan has some interesting decisions to make, both tactically and some enforced due to injury. A few players will be questionable for this game, which means we will likely see some new faces in the USMNT XI.

But who should Callaghan go with? GOAL takes a look…

  • Getty

    GK: Matt Turner

If there was a game to start Gaga Slonina, this would probably be the one, but will Callaghan actually do it? Probably not. Turner is here for a reason, and that reason is to play games. Each chance to get on the field is vital for the USMNT No.1, who may not get too many chances at club level as long as he remains at Arsenal.

Because of that, we'll start him, but do keep an eye on Slonina if Callaghan does want to give the youngster a go.

  • Getty Images

    LB: DeJuan Jones

John Tolkin played in the first game and was solid, but not spectacular. We'll give Jones this one to show what he's got. Both Tolkin and Jones are vying for a back-up spot with the full team, and while St. Kitts and Nevis isn't the best team to audition against, every impression counts.

  • Getty

    CB: Jalen Neal

He's certainly earned this. After coming in as a second-half substitute against Jamaica, Neal looked like the most composed defender on the field. He's only 19 years old and still has a lot of growing to do, but you have to say that he was ridiculously impressive when challenged by a pretty good Jamaica attack.

Because of that, he deserves a start and a chance to show why he may just be someone the U.S. can rely on in the knockout rounds.

    CB: Miles Robinson

This all depends on health. If Robinson is good to go, there's no doubt he'll be a key piece for this team the rest of the way. However, a knock kept him out of the first game, and it would be understandable if Callaghan wanted to give him a few more days of rest or a just a brief cameo to get his feet wet post-injury.

If not Robinson, Matt Miazga would probably be the guy as he looks to make his mark after being at least partially at fault for the first goal on Saturday night.

Inter player ratings vs Man City: Anonymous Edin Dzeko and selfish Lautaro Martinez come up short in Champions League final

The Nerazzurri had the chances to upset their treble-chasing opponents but their finishing let them down badly in Istanbul

Inter gave their all in Saturday night's Champions League final against Manchester City. They were the better side. They deserved extra-time at the very least. But they couldn't do the most important thing in football: put the ball in the back of the net.

Between them, Edin Dzeko, Lautaro Martinez and Romelu Lukaku all failed to get the goal that the underdogs' excellent display merited. Consequently, Inter will leave Istanbul proud of their performance, but with plenty of regrets having succumbed to Rodri's second-half goal.

Below, GOAL rates Simone Inzaghi and every member of the side that took to the field in Istanbul…

  • Getty

    Goalkeeper & Defence

    Andre Onana (6/10):

Took a few risks in possession and his distribution wasn't great, overall. But made a couple of decent saves, most notably an awkward stop from Haaland. Nothing he could do about the goal.

    Denzel Dumfries (4/10):

Given a torrid time by Grealish and was horribly hesitant going forward. Probably should have been replaced earlier.

    Matteo Darmian (5/10):

Put in a serious shift at the back and didn't really do a lot wrong during a solid if unspectacular showing.

    Francesco Acerbi (7/10):

Set the tone for an impressive performance with a strong early challenge on Haaland. Should be proud of his contribution to what was, for the most part, another impressive defensive display from Inter.

    Alessandro Bastoni (6/10):

Lost Haaland once early on and never quite looked his usual comfortable self on the ball. Gave everything for the cause, though, before being subbed in the closing stages, looking utterly exhausted.

    Federico Dimarco (7/10):

The revelation of Inter's European campaign and didn't disappoint in the final. Always busy hassling attackers, always looking to get forward. Unfortunately, he just couldn't add to his tournament haul of five assists.

  • Getty

    Midfield

    Nicolo Barella (6/10):

Worked tirelessly and took up some threatening positions on the right-hand side but there was just no end product.

    Marcelo Brozovic (8/10):

Inter's best player by some distance. Was everywhere, pilfering possession and then picking out passes left, right and centre. Didn't deserve to end on the losing side and he clearly felt the same way, with his frustration boiling over towards the end.

    Hakan Calhanoglu (4/10):

The hope was that playing in his native Turkey would bring the best out of him but he produced a dreadful display. Gave the ball away repeatedly and the supposed dead-ball specialist didn't even threaten from set-pieces.

  • Getty

    Attack

    Edin Dzeko (3/10):

Unsurprising that he started but still a really poor call. As expected, offered nothing on the break before being replaced just 10 minutes into the second half.

    Lautaro Martinez (4/10):

A menace with his energy and speed but was guilty of shocking selfishness after pouncing on a loose pass in the area. Could have passed to either Lukaku or Brozovic instead of trying to beat Ederson from an impossible angle.

    Subs & Manager

    Romelu Lukaku (5/10):

Offered a far, far greater attacking threat than either Dzeko or Lautaro but loses marks for squandering squandering a gilt-edged opportunity to force extra-time.

    Robin Gosens (5/10):

Replaced Bastoni with 15 minutes to go but couldn't make a difference despite going oh so close with an injury-time header.

    Raoul Bellanova (5/10):

Always available down the right flank and won a couple of corners.

    Henrikh Mkhitaryan (N/A):

Only came on for the final seven minutes.

    Danilo D'Ambrosio (N/A):

    Introduced alongside Mkhitaryan.

    Simone Inzaghi (5/10):

Made the right call picking Brozovic at the base of the midfield, but going with Dzeko over the in-form Lukaku was a dire decision. The Belgian may have missed chances but Inter looked like a different team with him up top.

West Ham’s predicted line-up vs Chelsea

David Moyes will hope to see an instant response from his players following last weekend’s 3-2 defeat at Newcastle when West Ham United host Chelsea on Saturday evening.

The Hammers fell two goals and a man down at St. James’ Park before mounting a second-half comeback, only to leave Tyneside without a point after Joe Willock headed home in the closing stages.

Chelsea then compounded the misery by retaking fourth spot in the Premier League table when held to a goalless draw by Brighton & Hove Albion in midweek, but only sit above the Irons on goal difference due to a superior defensive record.

Craig Dawson’s first-half red card will ensure Moyes is forced to make changes from the side that lost at Newcastle. So, with that in mind, here’s a potential line-up the West Ham boss could field featuring three alterations…

Dawson being unavailable for his first Premier League fixture since his West Ham debut on December 29 leaves Moyes with a decision to make, over sticking with a five-man backline or adapting his system with the inclusion of an additional midfield option.

Fabian Balbuena will expect Moyes to favour continuity and start the Paraguayan – who journalist Sam Delaney believes was “brilliant” last season – for his first opening call in 17 top-flight games, having come on for Aaron Creswell when leading against Leicester City.

Moyes decided against calling on Balbuena at Newcastle with West Ham going a goal behind in the move that led to Dawson’s sending off, but may now opt to recall the centre-back with Creswell potentially available to retake the left-back position from Ben Johnson.

Cresswell was unavailable in the North East due to the hamstring injury he sustained at home to Leicester, but Moyes confirmed on Friday that he is closing in on a return and will take a late fitness test to see if the 31-year-old has recovered sufficiently to face Chelsea.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/latest-west-ham-news%2c-views-and-gossip” title=”Latest West Ham news, views and gossip!”]

Michail Antonio (hamstring), Arthur Masuaku (knee) and Declan Rice (knee) have been ruled out of Saturday’s London derby, while Jesse Lingard is expected to be fit after being withdrawn at Newcastle due to cramp.

Rice being unavailable will likely see Mark Noble and Tomas Soucek anchor the engine room once again, while Antonio’s absence will be expected to see Jarrod Bowen and Lingard lead the attack for the third successive Premier League game.

Pablo Fornals has started each of West Ham’s last three fixtures after overcoming a groin injury during the March international break, but struggled to shine at Newcastle where his influence fizzled out and his loose backpass led to Dawson receiving his initial caution.

Moyes could now look to bench the Spaniard – who he lauds for having “incredible” energy and enthusiasm – and replace him with Said Benrahma, who has offered one more assist than Fornals despite playing 964 fewer minutes in the Premier League this term.

Ghodoussi issues Super League verdict

The footballing world was rocked on Sunday by the announcement of the European Super League.

The Premier League’s big six clubs have all agreed in principle to become founding members of the competition, along with six other European heavyweights. According to a statement released on Sunday night, the competition is ‘intended to commence as soon as practicable’.

The clubs involved in the proposed midweek tournament have been threatened with a ban from their domestic leagues, while their players could be barred from representing their country at major tournaments.

Clearly, the ramifications for the sport as a whole could be monumental.

PCP Capital Partners figure slams Super League money-grab

On Sunday afternoon, Mehrdad Ghodoussi, husband of Amanda Staveley and a partner in the company which agreed a £305m deal to buy Newcastle United in 2020, took to Twitter to denounce the plans, saying: “When football becomes just about money #superleague”.

Neither Bayern Munich nor Paris Saint-Germain have committed to the competition, with the French champions of the belief that European competition should not be restricted to the wealthiest clubs.

Transfer Tavern verdict

Were the European Super League to go ahead, it would be a definitive, maybe irreversible ‘game’s gone’ moment.

Supporters can only hope that the domestic leagues, UEFA and FIFA stand firm in their warnings, and that the clubs involved are forced to back down.

But who holds the cards? Can the Premier League really survive without the big six?

Of course Pep Guardiola is p*ssed off – he knows all of Man City's titles have an invisible asterisk beside them

The Catalan has won 11 trophies and broken countless records at the Etihad Stadium, but he knows they will be forever shrouded in suspicion

The legendary American sprinter Florence Griffith Joyner holds the women's world record for both the 100 metres and 200 metres. Yet in the eyes of many of the Olympic champion's peers and successors, there is an invisible asterisk beside both times.

Why? Because they believe that Griffith Joyner was doping, even though she never failed a drug test before her death at the age of 38.

Indeed, compatriot Gwen Torrence does not even "acknowledge those records… To me, they don't exist."

Manchester City's records, titles and trophies are also now in danger of being disregarded by rivals, which Pep Guardiola is pretty p*ssed off about…

    'Those moments belong to us'

A fortnight ago, after City had been charged with more than 100 breaches of the Premier League's financial regulations between 2009 and 2018, there was immediate speculation that the club might be stripped of the titles they won during that time frame.

Former Liverpool midfielder Lucas Leiva, who has a runners-up medal from 2013-14, asked on Twitter, "Am I a Premier League champion?"

Guardiola, though, mounted an extraordinary defence of his Abu Dhabi-based employers, and was enraged by the suggestion that the most famous moments in City's history had been somehow tarnished by the allegations of financial misconduct.

"Come on!" he said. "Those moments belong to us, regardless of the sentence. Think about what we’ve done… that goal from Sergio Aguero [against QPR in 2012], nobody can remove that. I don’t know, are we responsible for Steven Gerrard slipping at Anfield? Was that our fault, too?"

    Guardiola 'ashamed' of himself

Not since his famous "f*cking master" tirade against Jose Mourinho in 2011 had we seen Guardiola go off on such a rant.

Back then, he was lauded for such a ballsy outburst. It was even seen as a pivotal moment in Barcelona's Champions League-winning campaign. However, this time around, even Guardiola acknowledged that he stepped over the mark by taking an "unnecessary" and "stupid" cheap-shot at Gerrard, subsequently admitting that he was "ashamed" of himself for referencing the former Liverpool captain's slip against Chelsea during the closing stages of the 2013-14 Premier League title race.

However, it gave us one of those all-too-rare insights into the mind of a genius: Guardiola, one of the game's great thinkers, a man who is usually so composed and collected, is visibly rattled right now.

He is bitter, paranoid, desperate and deluded, which is, honestly, a little sad from a neutral perspective, but also wholly understandable.

Because he knows what is at stake here: his entire legacy at Manchester City.

  • Getty

    A lengthy legal battle

Normally at this time of year, when Guardiola is preparing his team for the knockout stages of the Champions League, he is repeatedly asked about whether his entire tenure at the Etihad Stadium can really be judged a success if he fails to conquer Europe.

However, with City set to face RB Leipzig in the tournament's last 16 on Wednesday, it's fair to wonder if it even matters anymore.

Guardiola may have recently extended his contract until 2025, but it's still highly likely that he will be gone by the conclusion of the Premier League's case against City.

It will be years before any punishment is dished out, with legal experts predicting that City will attempt to bury the Premier League in paperwork.

That's hardly good news for Guardiola, though. The club, its finances and its achievements will remain shrouded in suspicion until the day he departs. And he knows it, too.

'You know exactly what side I am on'

Guardiola is acutely aware that City have been already found guilty in the court of public opinion.

"My thoughts are that we have already been condemned," he told reporters. "You have to understand that the 19 teams of the Premier League are accusing us without any opportunity to defend ourselves.

"You know exactly what side I am on… If we are not innocent, we will accept what the judge or Premier League decide, but what happens if it's the same as UEFA and we are innocent? What happens to restore our damage?"

Guardiola is right to argue that everyone should be considered innocent until proven guilty, but he was also playing fast and loose with the truth here.

Liverpool set to open talks with quartet

Liverpool are set to open negotiations over new deals for Alisson, Virgil van Dijk, Fabinho and Mohamed Salah, according to journalist Paul Joyce.

The Reds suffered a night to forget on Tuesday, losing 3-1 away to Real Madrid in the Champions League quarter-final first leg.

It was a sobering evening for Jurgen Klopp’s men, with far too many players performing well below their usual level and the manager also having a bad day at the office.

The hope is that this season is just a one-off poor campaign for Liverpool – it hasn’t yet ended, in fairness – with key players staying put and helping launch a recovery in the coming years.

Joyce gives major update on Reds quartet

The Times‘ Joyce has provided a key update, in that respect, saying the club are looking to nail down Alisson, Van Dijk, Fabinho and Salah to new long-term deals.

It is stated that ‘discussions on a new contract will take place at some point’ for all four Liverpool heroes, in order to keep them at Anfield for the foreseeable future, in what would provide a huge boost to Klopp’s hopes of getting this side back to its best.

Transfer Tavern take

The aforementioned foursome have all been magnificent players for the Reds – modern-day legends, in fact – so this is a hugely positive update, with FSG giving Klopp a big helping hand.

Salah’s future, in particular, has been up in the air, but he scored his 27th goal of the season against Madrid and again showed how priceless he is.

Alisson, Van Dijk and Fabinho are all young enough to remain pivotal figures for four or five years, too, and they are a formidable trio that the rest of the team is built around – it is since the arrival of these three players that Klopp’s side have gone from contenders to winners.

In other news, one Liverpool player has been linked with a move to another Premier League team this summer – find out who it is here.

Paris Saint-Germain most expensive signings: How PSG splashed over €1.8 billion on incoming transfers

PSG have made transfers worth close to €2 billion in their quest for European supremacy

Paris Saint-Germain have significantly inflated an already wild transfer market ever since new owners Qatar Sports Investments (QSI) acquired a majority stake in the club in 2011.

In their ultimate mission to be crowned champions of Europe, PSG have splashed the cash on numerous high-profile signings over the last decade or so.

We all remember when they changed the transfer market forever by spending a world record €222 million on Neymar in 2017, followed by the second-most expensive transfer in history when they parted ways with €180m to bring Kylian Mbappe on board two years later after a successful loan spell.

There have been far more high-profile transfers over the course of the last two decades or so, though, so let's take a look at their spendings each season and at their most-expensive arrivals of the 21st century.

    10Javier Pastore | €42 million/£37.80 million | Palermo | 2011

Javier Pastore was one of the first few superstars to arrive at PSG in the initial days of the club's takeover by QSI.

Signed for €42 million (£37.80m) from Palermo in 2011, Pastore eventually spent seven years at PSG, scoring 29 goals in 186 appearances.

It was Pastore who vacated his number 10 jersey and gave it as a gift to Neymar when the Brazilian arrived at the club.

    9Thiago Silva | €42 million/£37.80 million | Milan | 2012

A transfer that very much took advantage of Milan's financial turmoil at the time, Thiago Silva signed for PSG for €42 million (£37.80 million) in the summer of 2012.

Milan initially refuted all rumours relating to the Brazilian defender so much so that the club's owner at that time, Silvio Berlusconi, insisted that he would stay at the club.

The whole saga even reached a stage where just 12 days before signing for PSG, Thiago Silva extended his contract with Milan until 2017.

However, the move happened after all mere weeks later, making Thiago Silva the most expensive defender in history at that time.

PSG initially signed Nuno Mendes on a season-long loan in the summer of 2021.

His performances for the club saw him nominated for Ligue 1's Young Player of the Year award and also saw him rewarded with a place in the Team of the Year.

The Portuguese left-back was so good that PSG decided to exercise their option to trigger his buyout clause of €48.80 million (£44.11m) and sign him on a four-year deal.

    AFC Bournemouth 2022-23

AFC Bournemouth don’t have the longest history in the Premier League – five seasons between 2015 and 2020 and the upcoming year – and throughout most of that they stuck to the same formula. The club’s signature black and red stripes were a constant, including in the two seasons the kits were produced by JD Sports. After two years in Championship exile, though, Bournemouth are back and they’ve reworked the stripes. Breaking from tradition, the stripes have been transformed into a jagged new design that references the architectural pillars of the home stadium.

    Arsenal 2005-06

As a Premier League mainstay, Arsenal have had some bangers. For the 2005-06 season, the club paid tribute to its iconic stadium Highbury, which it was due to leave at the end of teh season. The usual red and white was gone, with “Redcurrant” covering the shirt and socks instead. The design was a tribute to the first kit ever worn at Highbury, giving the ground the perfect send off as Henry broke the 30 barrier and the special-edition kit became an instant classic.

    Aston Villa 2021-22

Claret and blue is one of the Premier League’s great colour combinations and, in recent years, the chosen colours of three clubs. Aston Villa have a good claim to be the originators of the combination, and have stayed true to it for most of their 148-year history. The 2021-22 season saw it given a subtle update, with tonal stripes running down the claret section of the shirt. The massive Cazoo logo doesn’t help, but the 2021-22 kit was still one of Villa’s best ever.

    Brentford 2021-22

Brentford’s 2021-22 kit qualifies because it’s their only ever Premier League kit, and is due to remain for their second season in the division as well. While that may not be the most romantic reason to feature on this list, the shirt is a smart and simple design. The front and back both feature four red stripes and three white, honouring the colours that Brentford have worn for almost 100 years, referencing the club’s home country of Middlesex.
