Newcastle transfer news on de Vrij

Newcastle United are reportedly now eyeing up a bargain move in the summer for Stefan de Vrij.

The Lowdown: Centre-back changes

With Premier League safety all but secure, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s (KSA) Public Investment Fund (PIF) will surely now be looking forward to the summer in order to take the team to the next level.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/newcastle-news-6/” title=”Newcastle news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

One area that they look certain to strengthen in is the centre of defence, with the likes of Goncalo Inacio being mooted as a potential signing, and Jamaal Lascelles potentially heading out of the exit door.

The Magpies signed Dan Burn in January and the former Brighton star has been a huge hit, making a ‘ridiculous impact’, but it seems they are not finished yet.

The Latest: de Vrij eyed

As per Football Insider, the St. James’ Park faithful are just one of a number of clubs now targeting a move for de Vrij this summer, with both Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa also in the race for his signature.

He has been told by Inter Milan that he can leave for just £15m, £25m less than his previous £40m value, as the Serie A giants find themselves strapped for cash.

A recruitment source has revealed that the Netherlands international has not opened talks with Inter over a new contract, and his future is now up in the air.

The Verdict: Bargain

Considering his previous value, signing up de Vrij for a mere £15m would certainly be a bargain.

Described as a ‘monster’ by former Lazio defender Mauricio, the six-foot-two colossus simply loves to defend, with former player and fellow Dutchman Kees Kwakman saying that he ‘can do anything’, despite perhaps not being the biggest or the fastest for a central defender.

Nonetheless, at 30 years of age, de Vrij has so much experience of playing at the highest level, and so would bring an elite mentality into a dressing room hoping to pick up trophies throughout their long-term project.

Everton team news vs Chelsea

Patrick Boyland has now revealed some big Everton injury news before they play Chelsea at home in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon.

The Lowdown: Davies training

The Goodison Park faithful have revealed that Tom Davies is back in training, after not featuring since the 0-0 draw at home to Tottenham Hotspur in November.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/everton-news-4/” title=”Everton news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

There will be question marks over how quickly he can get back to full fitness, and of course how much impact he can actually have with so little of the season left to play.

The Latest: Injury update

Taking to Twitter, The Athletic journalist Boyland has revealed that although Davies is now eligible for selection due to Jean-Phillipe Gbamin moving out on loan, he is still ‘some way off’ a return to the team:

“Tom Davies *is eligible for selection between now and the end of the season. Everton added him to PL squad list after JP Gbamin joined CSKA Moscow on loan. But midfielder, who was pictured training today, is still some way off a return.”

The Verdict: Bad news

Of course, the fact that Davies still seems far away from a return to action will certainly come as a big blow to Frank Lampard and his side.

Before his horrific injury, the central midfield player had managed one goal and one assist in seven games this season, and being a local boy, knows how much it means to the supporters for the Merseyside club to stay up.

Nonetheless, with the campaign drawing nearer to a close, this is news that the Toffees would certainly not like to hear.

Newcastle handed Hugo Ekitike boost

A huge update has emerged on Newcastle United’s chances of landing Hugo Ekitike from Stade Reims this summer.

What’s the talk?

Journalist Ryan Taylor has relayed quotes from the Ligue 1 side’s president stating that the striker will move on from the club at the end of the season.

Fabrizio Romano reported on deadline day in January that a Toon deal for the young Frenchman fell through in the final hours, with the Magpies now looking to resurrect their interest.

Taylor Tweeted: “Newcastle have been told they can sign Hugo Ekitike this summer after January deadline day deal collapsed. NUFC Reims president Jean-Pierre Caillot: “Hugo will be allowed to go & he’s probably going to leave.” Also interest from West Ham, Wolves, Fulham.”

Eddie Howe will be delighted

The Magpies head coach will surely be delighted with this news as it comes as a huge boost to the club’s hopes of signing the striker.

Reims are seemingly resigned to him departing and this means that Newcastle can swoop in to strike an agreement with them this summer. Their talks with the Ligue 1 outfit in January could also give them a leg up over their rivals as they will already have a relationship with their French counterparts and will know, roughly, how much money they will want for him after discussing a deal earlier this year.

Howe will also be buzzing with this update as the prospect of signing Ekitike is an exciting one. He is a promising young talent who has also shown that he has the quality to make an impact at senior level in a top European league.

At the age of 19, he has the majority of his career left ahead of him to develop and hone his skills. This means that he would come in as a player for the future as he would be able to play for the club for a number of years, improving as he gains more experience.

However, he would also be a fantastic addition in the short term as he has been superb in Ligue 1 this season. He has scored nine goals and provided two assists in 14 starts in the division as he has shown that he can score on a regular basis, which is a quality Newcastle have lacked this term.

Callum Wilson is the club’s top scorer with six goals in 14 games and one of only four players with more than two goals in the Premier League. Therefore, Ekitike would be an excellent signing for the Toon in the short and long term.

Bayern Munich make contact to sign Man Utd star who Scholes told to leave

Bayern Munich are now in contact with the representatives of a Manchester United star, who has been told to leave the club by Old Trafford legend Paul Scholes.

Man Utd targeting midfield addition in 2026

The January transfer window is now less than a month away and Man United could once again be active on the hunt for reinforcements. In the summer, it was their frontline that took the focus as they welcomed Bryan Mbeumo, Benjamin Sesko and Matheus Cunha. Now, however, INEOS are looking to add to Ruben Amorim’s midfield.

It’s not a major surprise that the Red Devils are after a midfielder. Casemiro is an ageing option, Manuel Ugarte has proved to be an unreliable option and Mason Mount’s injury history speaks for itself. As such, a move for Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton would make perfect sense.

According to The Mirror, the England international sits at the very top of United’s wishlist even though he wants the guarantee of Champions League football next season.

Bad news for Mainoo: INEOS make £70m "passing machine" Man Utd’s no.1 target

For those at Old Trafford, it could be a case of one in one out if they sign Wharton but allow Kobbie Mainoo to leave in 2026. The Carrington graduate has been left aside by Amorim this season, despite the fact that the manager blocked his attempts to leave in the summer and told him to fight for his place.

The midfielder could now follow the path of Scott McTominay and others by thriving away from Old Trafford, especially if it is Bayern Munich who secure his signature.

Bayern Munich make contact with Mainoo

According to TeamTalk, Bayern Munich have now made contact with Mainoo over a 2026 move away from Man United. The German giants have joined the likes of Napoli in the race to sign the 20-year-old, who is increasingly desperate to leave his boyhood club when the chance arrives.

Mainoo isn’t the only one frustrated by his current situation, either. Man United legend took the Instagram after the midfielder was an unused substitute against West Ham United to say: “Bulls**t. The kid is being ruined, not being played in a team that can’t control a game of football. Hate seeing home grown players leave but it’s probably best for him now. Enough is enough.”

At his best, meanwhile, the academy graduate has earned high praise from teammate Bruno Fernandes, who described him as “great” after he first burst onto the scene while journalist Alex Turk has even described him as a “future £100m+ footballer.”

Praise from his captain isn’t enough for Amorim, however, who has not given Mainoo a fair chance since blocking his late loan move away from the club in the summer.

Arsenal preparing January move for Barcelona "animal" to challenge summer signing

Arsenal sporting director Andrea Berta is currently busy trying to lock down a host of key players to new contracts, but that doesn’t mean he hasn’t got one eye on the January transfer window.

Arsenal eye new Saka, Timber, Odegaard and Rice deals

After securing star defender William Saliba until 2030, in what was a major boost for Mikel Arteta, Berta is now working to tie down the likes of Bukayo Saka, Declan Rice and club captain Martin Odegaard.

Goalkeeper David Raya, much like Leandro Trossard, was also awarded improved contract terms without an official club announcement, which sees him earn a deserved pay rise after establishing himself as one of the best shot-stoppers in Europe.

Back-to-back Golden Glove awards sum up Raya’s exceptional displays between the sticks, and he’s throughly deserving of his reported pay rise.

As a matter of more urgency, considering his current deal expires in 2027, it is imperative that Arsenal agree an extension with Saka next. The 24-year-old is their arguable star player, and this isn’t lost on Berta.

The Italian could even make Saka the club’s first £300,000-per-week player in an attempt to lock him down, and he’s also held talks with both Odegaard and Rice over potential fresh terms.

Other reports claim that Arsenal are optimistic Saka will sign a new contract before Christmas, but while the England international’s discussions go on, Berta is also reportedly making some mid-season transfer plans.

Arsenal were among the Premier League’s biggest spenders last summer, investing north of £250 million on eight major signings.

However, they could attack the market again to provide competition for Martin Zubimendi in midfield.

Arsenal preparing January move for Barcelona star Marc Casado

That is according to reports from Spain, as it is believed that the North Londoners are very keen on Barcelona’s Marc Casado.

The 22-year-old has featured regularly under Hansi Flick this season, but is struggling overall to establish himself as a mainstay starter amid the fierce competition for places.

Arsenal are apparently preparing to make a January move for Casado, who is valued at around £26 million, and Berta could make a “reasonable offer” for the Spaniard mid-season in a bid to challenge Zubimendi and provide astute back-up.

Christian Norgaard was signed from Brentford as a utility player, but the Dane has already admitted that he’ll likely leave Arsenal in the next two to three years as he eyes a future return to Brondby.

With Norgaard’s long-term future away from N5, Casado’s could be brought in to bolster Arteta’s midfield for years to come, and it is worth noting that he’s very highly-rated by his La Liga peers.

Worse than Saracchi: Rodgers must drop Celtic flop who lost the ball 13x

Celtic moved to within two points of Hearts at the top of the Scottish Premiership table with a dramatic 3-2 win over Motherwell at Parkhead on Sunday.

The Hoops needed a stoppage-time winner from Daizen Maeda, who bundled in a cross from Michel-Ange Balikwisha, to claim all three points in front of their own fans.

In fact, they had to come from 2-1 down to claim a win in the second half. Benjamin Nygren equalised after snatching the ball inside the Motherwell box, before Maeda’s winner.

They had to produce a stunning comeback, in part, because Marcelo Saracchi conceded a penalty that allowed the away side to take the lead.

Why Marcelo Saracchi should be dropped

The Uruguay international was brought into the side in place of Kieran Tierney to provide the Scottish full-back with a rest, but failed to put in a solid performance.

He attempted a challenge in the box with the wrong foot, stepping on the attacker with his left foot instead of using his right to make a block, which resulted in a penalty to Motherwell.

That came after he gave Tawanda Maswanhise too much time to put a cross in for Motherwell’s first goal in the first half, standing too far off the winger out wide.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

Despite those errors for the goals, which should see him dropped from the XI, Luke McCowan was even worse than the Boca Juniors loanee in the middle of the park.

Why Luke McCowan should be dropped

Brendan Rodgers should ruthlessly ditch the Scottish central midfielder from the team after the international break because of his disappointing performance against Motherwell.

The left-footed star was put in the midfield to provide a spark and creativity in possession for the Hoops, yet he played 60 minutes without registering a shot on goal or a chance created, per Sofascore.

This shows that the former Dundee star was completely ineffective in possession for the Scottish giants, because he did not provide any sort of threat as either a scorer or a creator of goals.

The 27-year-old central midfielder’s general play throughout the match was not much better, unfortunately, as he was even worse than Saracchi with his all-round performance in and out of possession.

As you can see in the table above, Saracchi won more duels, made more defensive contributions, and completed more dribbles during a similar amount of time on the pitch.

McCowan was far too wasteful with the ball at his feet, losing possession 13 times, when you consider that he did not create a single chance for his teammates in an hour for Celtic.

It was a big chance for the central midfielder to impress, given that Rodgers now has two weeks to reflect on this performance, ahead of the next block of matches.

Unfortunately, the experienced star failed to grasp his opportunity to nail down a place in the starting XI, as he did not do enough in or out of possession to suggest that he should retain a starting berth.

Eze will love him: £40m PL striker would now "love" to sign for Arsenal

What was looking like a rather dull summer for Arsenal fans just a week or so ago has since burst into life.

Kepa Arrizabalaga might be the only signing to have been officially announced as things stand, but that doesn’t look likely to remain the case.

The paperwork for Brentford star Christian Norgaard has reportedly been signed, and Martin Zubimendi is expected to be unveiled before the end of the week.

On top of that, Mikel Arteta looks to finally be getting some attacking stars in, with Eberechi Eze looking like a likely addition, and now reports linking the club to someone who’d be the perfect teammate for him.

Arsenal target dream Eze teammate

While the start of the window was dominated by stories linking Arsenal to one of Benjamin Sesko or Viktor Gyokeres, Eze has now taken centre stage.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

Stories touting him for a move to the Emirates started to gain traction midway through last week, but then really gained momentum in recent days, with some claiming that Arteta had been involved in positive talks with him over the weekend.

Then, in yet more good news, some of the most recent reports have stated that the Englishman is now “desperate” to join the Gunners.

That desire to move to N5 might only increase now that the North Londoners have also been linked with someone who’d be the perfect teammate for him: Ollie Watkins.

That is according to insider Team news and ticks, who, on the latest episode of The Inside Foreward podcast, revealed that Arsenal have once again made contact with the Aston Villa player.

They claim that even though the Englishman is not currently the club’s priority striker signing, he is high up on the list, and that, as a boyhood fan, he would personally “love to play” for them.

In terms of the money involved, other stories from this summer indicate that a fee of around £40m could be enough to tempt the Claret and Blue into selling.

At that price, this potential transfer feels like a no-brainer, especially as he’d be an incredible teammate for Eze.

Why Watkins would be perfect for Eze

Unsurprisingly, the first and without a doubt the most significant reason Eze would love playing alongside Watkins at Arsenal, or anywhere for that matter, is his output.

For example, since the start of the 23/24 season, the often unplayable “nightmare,” as dubbed by Conor Coady, has scored a staggering 44 goals and provided 29 assists in 107 appearances in all competitions, totalling 7901 minutes.

In other words, the former Exeter City gem has averaged a goal involvement every 1.46 games, or one every 108.23 minutes, which really has to be considered world-class.

Now, just imagine how much better Eze’s already impressive numbers of 25 goal involvements in 43 games last season would be next year if he were playing just behind a striker as effective as the Villa ace.

Moreover, another reason the Palace star could love playing alongside the 29-year-old is that they are both now England internationals.

Therefore, they could have the chance to further develop their partnership at both the domestic and international levels, which in turn could help them secure more game time under Thomas Tuchel.

Ultimately, the best players in world football want to play alongside the best, and based on his performances for Villa in recent years, we expect Eze would be thrilled to start alongside Watkins at Arsenal.

Therefore, Andrea Berta and Co should be doing all they can to sign both of them this summer.

He'd be perfect for Mbeumo: Man Utd prepare bid for "exceptional" £28m ace

Manchester United’s side is one that has massively struggled over recent seasons, struggling to match the levels that were produced during Sir Alex Ferguson’s reign.

The Red Devils have now gone 12 whole seasons without a Premier League triumph, with current boss Ruben Amorim the latest to try his luck at Old Trafford.

However, so far, the 40-year-old has been unable to transform the situation, achieving a 40% win rate in his 42 games in the role, leading to a 15th-place league finish this season.

Leeway should be handed his way, however, only having the January transfer window earlier this year to make the additions he wanted to help him in his quest at the club.

However, this summer is a huge period in his stint in charge at the Theatre of Dreams, needing to find the right players for his system if he is to be a success in the role.

The latest on United’s hunt for new additions

Viktor Gyokeres is a player who has been firmly on their radar over the last couple of years, but United now appear to be in pole position for his signature after the latest update on his future.

Warren Zaire-Emery is another surprise name on the club’s shortlist, after the hierarchy made an enquiry to sign the PSG youngster, who’s currently valued at £85m.

However, a new name has entered the mix over the last couple of days, with Borussia Dortmund’s midfield star Felix Nmecha on their radar, according to one Spanish outlet.

They claim that the Red Devils are preparing an offer to land the 24-year-old this summer, with a £28m price tag mooted for his signature in the coming months.

It also states that the former Manchester City academy star could have his head turned by the Red Devils ahead of the 2025/26 campaign, but that the Bundesliga side have no intention of offloading him.

Why United’s £28m target would be perfect for Mbeumo

Bryan Mbeumo has been a name on the lips of all supporters over the last couple of weeks, understandably so given the keen interest in his signature.

The 25-year-old has been a player who’s thrived in the division over recent years, but he produced his best-ever campaign last time around, scoring 20 times in the Premier League for Brentford.

However, a deal hasn’t been easy up until now, with the Red Devils having two separate offers rejected, the latest being a fee in the region of £60m.

A deal should be completed smoothly if a fee is agreed, after the Cameroonian international has agreed personal terms with Amorim’s side over a move to Old Trafford.

He could be boosted in his chances of success should Nmecha move to the club, as the German possesses a lot of qualities that would aid the forward in attacking areas.

Borussia Dortmund's FelixNmechaleaves the pitch

When delving into his stats from this campaign, he’s thrived in numerous key areas, making him the perfect box-to-box option within Amorim’s 3-4-2-1 system.

Nmecha, who’s been labelled “exceptional” by former boss Nuri Şahin, has registered an 88% pass accuracy along with 5.1 progressive passes per 90 – subsequently showing why he’d be perfect for Mbeumo and having the tools to provide him with the opportunities needed.

The German has also starred without the ball, winning 1.3 tackles per 90 and 1.4 interceptions per 90, making him the perfect ball-winning option in the middle of the park.

£28m for a player of Nmecha’s calibre could prove to be one of the bargain additions of the summer, offering Amorim a new dimension to his midfield and taking the side to new heights.

If he can excel without the ball and provide Mbeumo with added chances in front of goal, it would be a sensational signing and one that could push them back up the table in 2025/26.

Celtic begin negotiating personal terms with £4.2m target who Rodgers loves

Celtic are in the process of making some significant moves this summer and look to have reignited their interest in an exciting attacker, according to a report.

Celtic searching for attackers to offer final third variation

Brendan Rodgers opted to operate with Daizen Maeda and Adam Idah as central options during the second half of last campaign, taking a look at the market before deciding to stick rather than twist in January.

However, Celtic are set to conclude a deal for Fulham youngster Callum Osmand after the Wales international turned down the opportunity to sign professional terms at Craven Cottage, offering an alternative threat through the middle.

Nevertheless, Frank McAvennie believes the Bhoys should offer a shock deal to Jamie Vardy amid their efforts to strengthen across the front four positions, with free agent Danny Ings also recommended by the former Scotland international.

The ex-Celtic explained: “Vardy. I would take Vardy. I know they are talking about him going to Rangers, but I would take Vardy at Celtic.

“They (Vardy and Danny Ings) are goal scorers. Two of them are goal scorers. They are just natural predators. Get them up here. Good names.”

Celtic can forget about Kvistgaarden with move to sign "gifted" £0 striker

With Celtic seemingly set to miss out on signing Mathias Kvistgaarden from Brøndby, they should instead go for a “gifted” free agent.

ByBen Gray Jun 10, 2025

While it feels unlikely that either of the duo mentioned would arrive north of the border, there is an appetite for another striker and winger at a minimum to bolster squad depth.

Marco Tilio’s return from Melbourne City could also intrigue Celtic, but it has always felt likely that the Bhoys will dip into the market to acquire new creative threats.

Speaking of which, Rodgers’ men have now reportedly opened talks with a familiar target as they look to push a deal over the line, per recent developments.

Celtic hold discussions to sign Michel-Ange Balikwisha

According to Sacha Tavolieri on X, Celtic have made contact and opened discussions with Michel-Ange Balikwisha’s camp to begin ‘new discussions regarding personal terms’ involving the Royal Antwerp man.

Retaining an interest in the former Belgium Under-21 international since last summer, further updates are expected on his future in the coming days as Rodgers looks to land his man.

Labelled “unpredictable” by Ben Mattinson, Balikwisha is someone the Irishman has personally expressed an interest in signing and his small sample size on the pitch over the campaign has illustrated why.

Despite having injury issues, the 24-year-old registered four goals and three assists in 18 matches across all competitions. Valued at roughly £4.2 million by Transfermarkt, it remains to be seen what the ballpark figure is for Celtic to secure his services.

Mourinho loves him: Everton readying offer to sign "intelligent" forward

Everton are now ready to make an offer to sign an “intelligent” new striker who is loved by his manager Jose Mourinho, according to a recent report.

Everton targeting Premier League proven signings

As the Toffees head into their new stadium, they hope the prospect of being a part of a new era at the club will help them when it comes to signings this summer. This is a chance for David Moyes to put a real stamp on this Everton team, and from recent rumours, it is clear the Scotsman is targeting Premier League captures.

Everton now make bid to beat Man City in race to sign £1.5m EFL rising star

ByBrett Worthington Jun 5, 2025

It’s already been reported that the Toffees are eyeing a surprise double raid on their arch-rivals Liverpool, as they are interested in signing Ben Doak and Joe Gomez, both players who could be free to leave Anfield. As well as looking at Liverpool, it’s also been reported that Burnley duo Josh Brownhill and Maxime Estève are firmly on their radar, as both players impressed for the Clarets during their Championship promotion campaign.

Adding more creativity to his team seems to be a priority for Moyes this summer, as Sky Sports reported earlier this week that the Toffees are keen on striking a deal to sign Matt O’Riley from Brighton & Hove Albion. The Dane suffered a frustrating season with the Seagulls due to a pre-season injury, and it is now unclear if he remains a part of their plans heading into the new campaign.

Everton ready to make an offer to sign Oguz Aydin

Doak and O’Riley are not the only attacking options under consideration, as according to Sporx, relayed by Everton News, Everton are ready to test the waters and make a move to sign Oguz Aydin from Fenerbahçe.

The report states that Moyes is looking to add more depth and quality to the wide areas of his team, and that has taken them to Aydin. The 24-year-old joined the Turkish giants last summer and finished the campaign with seven goals and four assists in 25 Süper Lig games.

Despite the fact that he is under contract until 2028, the Toffees are ready to “test the waters” and make an offer to Fenerbahçe for the winger. In fact, Everton sent scouts to watch Aydin in action last season, and he is obviously a player they have kept a close eye on and are now ready to make a concrete move for.

Aydin is a player who can play on both flanks, and given his importance last season and the fact he has only just joined Fenerbahçe, it is likely going to take a big offer to tempt them into selling.

Aydin has done really well since Mourinho brought him to the club; in fact, the Fenerbahçe boss hasn’t hidden how much he rates the winger, labelling him “intelligent”: “He is a good player physically and tactically and very intelligent.

“With all due respect to (Vincenzo) Montella (Turkey manager), he should be happy. I suppose the team that did not sign him will be unhappy. We brought him in at the last minute. I asked him to give me time. He was not ready, but, after 4-5 months, he has reached an optimal level. I am very happy for him.”
